Denise's Story
After high school I went to Cal State Hayward (now East Bay), and graduated with a BA in Mass Communications with a journalism concentration and an Advertising Minor. I worked in media for the first 10 years (a little radio, then community television, and eventually newspapers), both writing and in advertising. I skipped around in a few different sales industries after that; which led to some great travel. After a difficult time conceiving and a rough birth, we figured this would be our only child, so I stayed home with him the first couple of years, then promptly got divorced. I decided all the travel associated with my prior career would not let me be the kind of parent I wanted to be, so I went back to school to earn a Masters in Education so I could still work, but have the same times off as my son.( Silly me!) While I was in school, I worked as an aircraft mechanic, and also earned my private pilot license (because I was just not busy enough with the Masters, single motherhood, and work)!. I have since gone on to earn m...Expand for more
y Commercial Pilot license, bought 2 airplanes and a helicopter (okay, I'm down to one), earned another Masters in Special Education, as well as credentials in Science, and K-8 (elementary), and mild/mod and mod/severe special ed. Currently, (get this!) I teach at Granada High School as a Special Ed teacher. Some of us just never leave! My son, Michael, attends Granada and is entering his Junior year with a 4.2 GPA. Very proud of him! He is looking to major in science (go figure).
Now I am embarking on a new adventure in life: I am putting together a non-profit foundation to assist special needs young adults to learn desirable vocational skills in higher level, economically resistant industries leading to long term employment opportunities to bridge the financial gap preventing these individuals from becoming independent, or semi independent self-sustaining, contributing members of our community. Aaaand, because that just isn't quite enough to keep me busy 24/7....I am also teaching English (ESL) to 150+ Vietnamese pilots!
