Denise's Story
Life
After graduating in 77, I spent a few years learning about the real world, including my "starter marriage" to a boy from Bullard HS (it lasted a whopping 17 months!), living in a tent in Yosemite for a couple of years while working for Curry Company, singing in a rock band in LA, and running a restaurant in Fresno (the Sandwich Works across the street from Gong's Market on Ashland and Fresno St.).
I finally returned to college at Fresno City in 1982 where I majored in journalism with a minor in marketing, and I completed my bachelors degree at the University of Phoenix. I moved to LA again in 1985 where I held jobs as an account executive for a necktie company, and as customer service manager for Sideout Sport. I got married again in 1988, and had a son Dylan in 1990, and a daugther Ashley in 1992. Oh...I also have a dog (Penney - a 6-year old beagle) and two cats (Chloe and Jess, recently rescued kittens from the SPCA). I've lived in Los Angles, CA; Portland, OR; Denver, CO; Washington, DC; and on Cape Cod, MA settling in Rhode Island where I've lived for the past 11 years now. My life partner is Emmy award winning film maker Cally Wolk and we own our own company Mediapalette that specializes in communications for non-profit concerns. Over the years I've done everything from waiting tables and cooking ...Expand for more
in restaurants, to selling tires at JC Penneys, to working at a travel magazine, working in an advertising agency, and serving as marketing director for several small companies. For the past 8 years I've been working as a researcher, writer, and speaker on high school reform which has given me the opportunity to travel the country working with states, cities, districts, schools and individual teachers to improve the conditions for learning in high schools. I spent 5 years working at The Education Alliance at Brown University in Providence, and my current position is as senior program associate and director of publications with Educators for Social Responsibility in Cambridge, MA.
When I'm not working, I'm really a homebody. My house is right on the ocean on Naragansett Bay in RI, and we live in a quintessential New England town, complete with white steepled church. My house is nearly 100 years old, so I'm constantly working on SOMETHING, and when I'm not working on the house, I'm tinkering in the yard (when the weather allows). New England winters are a tough change after growing up in California, but I surely prefer snow to Fresno fog! I own some land out in western Colorado that I plan to build a house on and will retire to work from home and write a lot more after Ashley graduates from high school in 2010.
