Denise's Story

I finally decided to "upgrade" on this site so I could try to connect with some old friends from Seton Hall. The Almost Class of 1975. Ah, what might have been. Oh well. I did senior year at Longwood High School, then went on to SUNY Stony Brook, where I got a BA in political science in 1979. I then went to NYU Law, where I got a JD in 1982. I worked in NYC for a few years, as a staff attorney at the NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs. In 1985 I moved back to Long Island, settling in Riverhead, where I got a job as an associate in a local law firm. I went into solo practice a couple of years later. I was elected to the Riverhead Town Board in 1987 and served one four-year term. I didn't run for re-election. I married Peter Blasl in 1991. We had Katie in 1992 and Courtney in 1993. We live in Riverhead in a little Cape tucked away off road that's become very busy, thanks to all the development around here. But our land is like a little oasis. I love to garden and we've got all kinds of birds and butterflies here. In 1999 I started writing for the local newspaper, The News-Review, and finally figured out what I really wanted to be when I grew up. I've been working for Times/Review Newspapers ever since. In 2004 I became co-publisher of the company. We publish four community newspapers and the LI Wine Press. Our daughters attend Riverhead High School. They are very active in the drama club, The Blue Masques, and the school's chamber and show choirs. Katie is interested in a career on stage, or music education. Courtney is interested in medical school. They are a constant source of wonder for me. It's been amazing watching them grow up. I wish I could do it all over again. Far and away, motherhood has been the best thing I've ever done. I'm not in touch with too many old friends from high school. computer engineer. We've recently gotten together for lunch a couple of times. Kathy Bonhote's kids are all grown up. She's a grandmother! She runs the spa at East Wind in Wading River. Valerie Biscardi lives in East Patchogue and works for the Town of Brookhaven's community development agency. Every now and then I see Ken Reeves, who's the superintendent of recreation for the Town of Southold. And Joe Tyson and I have communicated, of a sort, on facebook, where I started up a Seton Hall High School "group" that could use a few more members. (Hint, hint.) It would be great to get a reunion of some sort organized. Was there a reunion for our ¿ gulp ¿ 30th in 2005? I didn't hear anything of it. Maybe if we start now we can plan one for our 35th in 2010. Or maybe we can have a mini-reunion of some sort before then. We have a big backyard and we'd be happy to host a get-together at our house during the summer. There's a Seton Hall alumni website. I just recently learned about it. Classmates won't let you post a website address here. I guess that's their way of trying to "own" their niche. Very obnoxious. And it also doesn't work. Compare the success of this site to facebook, for instance. Anyway, the address is setonhallhs dot org. I hope by writing it out like this it gets past their censor. Well, that's about all I have to say. Life is good, but passes with startling speed. I turned 50 in November. It freaked me out a little. I started coloring my hair, which was pretty much all silver. Now I'm a brunette again. It's a pain in the neck to keep up, but it definitely makes you look younger. I've always hated old ladies with dyed hair, and now I'm one of them! Get in touch somehow: classmates, facebook, myspace, e-mail (my last name, civiletti at gmail dot com.) I'd love to hear from you. Esse quam videri. Best wishes, Denise Civiletti Class of 1975 June 1, 2008
