Denita's Story
Life
My life thus far -- How can I describe it? It started out rocky but it is okay now. When I finished college and moved back to Alabama it was tough finding a job in my field, especially with little experience so my husband and I moved to Atlanta, Ga. Things were much better there. I worked in my field of Environmental Chemistry for a great company until my husband decided that he wanted to move back home (I guess the country boy in him couldn't stay away). So here I am now back in Alabama. Initially it was rough but now I am again working in my field as a Chemist for our local Water System. It is great and life is good. I have been married going on 14 years to a great guy (sometimes, just joking!) and we have two beautiful boys who still amaze me everyday. I would love to have a little girl but I think my time has passed, so I am content. What GOD has for me is for me!! I still miss the city but the country is finally growing on me.
School
I was really shy and quiet in high school so I didn't make much of an impact on anything. However, Mr. Coxwell and Mrs. Strode gave me the inspiration to work hard and accomplish much. They are truely the reasons why I choose a career in the sciences! As for crushes I will continue to pleade the 5th on that one; Although I made friends whom I will always adore and never forget.
College
College life for me was an eye opening experience. Talladega is very small so I thought I would fit in perfectly. I did alot of things that I never imagined ev...Expand for more
er doing but to some people it was a normal way of everyday life. I learned a lot , partied probably too much and made friends that I will never forget. I truely enjoyed my college years. If I could do it all over again I would only change a few things like pledging and not partying so much. Dr. Stinson is the only professor that still stands out to this day! I don't think he impacted me as much as my high school teachers but he did inspire me to stay focused and not give up. And for that I am truely grateful!
Workplace
My first taste of the real world was when I graduated college I did an internship with USEPA as a training Chemist. It was such a great experience and I loved Chicago! After that experiece I was homesick so I moved back to Alabama got married and worked in a Chicken processing plant -- boy that was the worst experience of my life. I soon wised up and moved to Atlanta and revived my career in the environemntal field as a Environmental Chemist with a major circuit board manufacturer. Then my husband got homesick and we again moved back to Alabama. This time though I worked at UAB in the medical lab as a tech - not my field but it beats stinky chickens anyday(except for the boo-boo samples I sometimes had to analyze). I traveled back and forth to birmingham until I was offered my current position at the local water treatment plant as a Chemist. I was recently offered a position as the Lakes Manager for the City but the job is too political for me. So I am staying put for now.
