Bradley's Story
I truly believe that growing up in Latrobe during the 1950's and 1960's was the perfect place for me. Small town living with a "Leave It To Beaver" environment can't be replaced in today's world. You felt safe, secure and known in your community. It offered terrific schools which provided an excellent and challenging education. The community rallied around the downtown on Friday nights for shopping or football games. The sports facilities were second to none, especially the football stadium, Rogers-McFeely pool, Little League field, real clay tennis courts, basketball courts, play grounds and Legion Keener Park. The new high school featured an incredible basketball court and swimming pool. Social life was centered around the Rink and the Red Rooster. As a kid I was free to wander and roam by foot, bike and on the Loyalhanna. Idlewild Park was the highlight of the summer for school picnics. Lawson Heights provided ample room for pick up football, baseball, basketball, and whiffle ball games, c...Expand for more
orn to be thrown during Halloween and sledding in the winter. You visited your neighbors on Christmas to see their presents and sample holiday treats, nut rolls, scapple, and cookies. I can still remember hearing the Pirates win game seven of the 1960 World Series while on the bus at Mountain View Elementary and learning of President Kennedy's assasination in class at Pleasant Unity Elementary.
Maybe I have forgotten how hot and humid the summers were without air conditioning, the overcast skies of spring and the dreariness of long, cold winter days. Where else could such a small town have the notariety of an Arnold Palmer, Fred Rogers, birthplace of profesional football, first banana split, Rolling Rock Beer, specialty metals, Steelers training camp, St. Vincent College, and more. All in all, I dont believe I could have been at a better place at a better time. I'm proud to say I come from Latrobe and recall fondly the many memorable people and events that made those days so appealing.
