Dennis's Story
After graduation I joined the Coast Guard, went to ET school in Groton CT. Spent year and a half on CG Cutter Ariadne (built in 1934 for the Navy) based out of St Petersburg, FL. We patroled between Key West and Cuba picking up refugees from rafts and small boats. Volunteered to go to Viet Nam and patroled in an 82 ft boat from DMZ to about 70 miles south of Danang where we stationed out of. After a year returned to Seattle CG base and finished out my four year tour. Got married 3 months before discharge from CG. Worked for small company which had a subcontract at Todd Shipyards which was building three destroyers for the Navy. We were installing the electronics on them. After that was hired by Northern Radio in Ballard, WA who got a contract from state of Alaska to install radios, antennas and towers in 30 Eskimo village health clinics so they could communicate with hospitals in larger Alaska towns. as a tech in between for Northern Radio installing and repairing electronics on fishing and crab boats, most of which went to Alaska in seasons. Also went on Aleutian chain and took care of radios in canaries. After about 4 years Northern sold their retail section to myself and another employee in Ballard, WA. We sold, and installed all electronics (radios, radar, depth sounders, sonar, etc. mostly to fishing and crab boats but also to U of W research boat, a Navy sub and air craft carrier, tug boats, and yachts. After 20 years we sold our company to a competeter. I then worked 5 years for JRC (Japan Radio Company) as service manager and did some training for dealers around the country. After leaving JRC I went to work for Simrad in Lynwood, WA as part of their repair department. After 6 years that division was closed and I retired in 2008. . During my work times I spent a couple visits to Japan, Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands getting some training. Now living in Peoria, AZ
