Dennis's Story

Can't believe it's been 50 years already, or 30 years since our 20th Reunion--the only one I ever attended!! As my mother always said, "where did the time go?" As I'm now at the age she was when she started asking the question, I can relate completely. By having left MI for good in 1967 (I've been in the South since), I haven't had the opportunity to stay in touch with classmates like some of you--except for one with whom I'm still close after 52 years. So, it's a thrill to be able to look forward to our 50th reunion and getting re-acquainted. Looking back at our 20th Reunion program booklet, a few things have changed for me. "Health" is still important to me (as I'm sure it is to most of you), and I've had to adapt to inevitable changes we all experience. With advancing arthritis, I've had to recently give up the tennis and running I cited in the "20th" booklet. But, I replaced these with biking and walking, so a person just has to keep adapting. I hope I can put off a left hip replacement til after our Reunion, but if I have to have it, I'll have to time it to be up to snuff for the Reunion. Overall, life's been pretty good to me, and because there are still so many things I and my wife want to do before our days are over, I hope that I have up to 30 more years in me. My wife of 44 years from Kingsford MI (the U.P) will certainly be a good influence in helping me get there. So, while my remaining ties to MI dwindle as my wife and I lose family members, I'm looking forward to the connection this Reunion offers. ...Expand for more
Hope this message finds all of you in a similarly "good place." I'd love to hear from any of you in the meantime. Jan. 2016 UPDATE Well, all, I believe most of us are getting into our "sunset years," wouldn't you say? As a certified Late Bloomer, I certainly hope the trend applies to my ultimate longevity, and that I have a good 20 years left. Lord knows, I've got enough agendas going to easily fill another 20 years. So, how am I entering this life phase? Reflectively, thankfully & optimistically. As I look back on my life--including our H.S. years-- I feel very blessed & grateful for how I've become the person I am, with still so much to look forward to. While my life really didn't get going until my Soph-year in college (MSU), I nevertheless look fondly upon our Class of '62. I think we were a great bunch of kids, who likely went on to do some great things in this world. Even if most folks get sentimental about their past at this stage, I truly believe that our class was blessed with a lot of opportunity & goodness. I've shared with some of you how kindly I look back at who you were 50-some years ago, and appreciate you more as the years go by. I pray that you join me in making the best of the time that we have left, and hope that I can make up for missing our 50th Reunion by somehow staying in touch with you (thank God for our class website) and even seeing you again one day. Happy New Year, and know that you always have a standing invitation to stay at our place if you ever visit Durham-Chapel Hill or Raleigh NC.
