Dennis's Story

Life Raised for the first 12 years of my life in Clark, NJ. This was a terrific place to raise children. There were no block walls dividing neighbors, like here in sunny southern California. I remember the woods around my house and spending a lot of time down at the reservoir. Playing baseball in the Little League was fun and roller skating in the Abraham Clark School gym on Fridays was a blast. When I moved to California in 1965 when I was 12 I left behind many good friends. I think the friends you make while growing up in those early years you remember for life. I wish I had kept in touch with my early friends. I made a lot of friends in California and still keep in touch. I began to play golf in NJ at the age of 9 and have been addicted ever since. I played on the High School team. These were the best days of High School. During college I met on a blind date a wonderful girl from Israel. She was just visiting the United States and had no intention of ever leaving Jerusalem. I fell in love with her immediately and we were married just a few months later in 1978. We were married in Jerusalem and have lived north of Los Angeles for the past 37 years. We have four terrific children, all boys aged 22-35. College Wasted a few years in a local junior college. I was working in a grocery store when I got married at 25. I looked around at the people I worked with and knew I did not want to end up like them. I transferred to California State University at Los Angeles. I attended Cal State for two years full time, year round. I worked full time while taking classes full time. After graduating college I studied for the CPA exam, ultimately passing it after two tries. During this time my wife and I had two children. This was the most difficult time in my life. I was not at college to have fun, that is why I never think about those days. Workplace I have been working since I was ...Expand for more
16. I spent 11 years working for a supermarket. I began as a boxboy then was promoted to the liquor department. I decided I did not like the customers so I took a job in the store office balancing the registers. After graduating college, majored in business/accounting,I became a CPA and worked for 4 years in public accounting. I worked in a small CPA firm that specialized in the garment industry. I knew that I was not going to become a partner and I was also disenchanted with public accounting. I did not like the overtime and working on weekends. After public accounting I began to work for Guess? I started out as an asistant controller then was promoted to the controller for their retail stores. I worked for Guess? for 2 years. I remember a counselor that I admired once told me not to get pigeon-holed into any industry so I decided to get out of the 'shmata' business. I took a job as controller of a company that manufactured jewelry and had a chain of retail stores. I left there after 2 years due to personality conflicts with the owners. I began to work at Maxfield in 1988 and worked there for 17 years. Maxfield is an upscale specialty clothing store. Many of its customers are in the entertainment business. Many are actors, actresses, musicians, athlelets, writers, director, producers etc. Its like the who's who of show business. I wore many hats from controller, to human resources to information manager. The commute and the long hours were killing me and taking time away from my family. I recently got a job as a controller in a start-up biomedical firm near where I live. The company develops and manufactures innovative neuroprosthetic and rehabilitation systems for treatment of impairments resulting from central nervous system disorders such as strokes and spinal cord injuries. I work with many wonderful people and the job is very rewarding. I hope this is my last job.
