Dennis's Story
Life
We've been Californians since 1976 and are very happy here. I'm pretty much retired, still do a bit of free-lancing at home to support my vices. Our eldest daughter, Renee, lives 40 minutes away in Atascadero and has 3 kids, two boys and a girl. We generally see them about twice a month, as they are always on the go with activities and sports. Rachel is our youngest, and she is finally getting a foothold in the fashion industry in Los Angeles as an assistant designer for BluPrint Apparel, maker of the B.L.E.U. label for juniors. She is less than 3 hours away from us here in Nipomo (10 min. north of Santa Maria), which by the way is the answer to a trivia question of sorts. It was on Jeopardy, so I'm told, as "best weather in the continental U.S." Can't disagree, coastal 70's most of the year, with an occasional brief hot spell when the Santa Ana winds blow in from the desert.
Doris and I have been together for 38 years, met on a blind date (Space Needle, thanks to Bob Grout) and as one wag put it, we must have both been blind. We have very different interests, but since we're both...Expand for more
independent to a fault, we seldom get in each others' way! She's had both hip joints replaced in recent years, and is able to walk a couple of miles each evening. I have enjoyed good health save for a few minor skirmishes with skin cancer, not surprising for a thin-skinned redhead, and a few of the usual aches and pains as we reach the "wonder years."
With the excellent weather it is golf heaven, especially since I prefer to play at sunset. In summer I can start at 4:30 or 5:00 and walk 18 in under 3 hours, nothing like San Jose where we lived until 2001.
I've always been into cars, my other vice a '72 BMW CSi coupe that's more of a project than anticipated. I am the local rep for the owner's club and arrange activities for the group. There are a couple of tracks a few hours from here that host vintage sports car races, Willow Springs and Buttonwillow, which I attend several times a year as well as nostalgia drag events at Bakersfield.
So to all of us who've survived this long, here's hoping we remain healthy and active, and I look forward to seeing you in 2012 at the 50th.
