Dennis's Story
School
At Central, I played football end position for JV and varsity. I was active in Solidarity, Dance Committee, and National Honor Society. I ran unsuccessfully for Class Treasurer my senior year. I graduated tenth in my class. My girl friend was Barbara Howe, and she went to Providence High School.
I followed my older brother, Tom, to Texas A&M. I had 3 brothers who previously graduated from Central.
Workplace
I found a great job at the University of New Mexico CIRT (Computer and Information Resources and Technology) computer center as an IBM systems programmer. After doing that for about 8 years or so, I became a computer systems analyst and now work on special projects -- mainly designing computer scannable surveys, and producing statistical analyses. I also help maintain the IBM mainframe and Unix system databases and extract statistical data for management.
Military
In May 1967, I graduated with a B.A. in mathematics and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant after spending 4 years in the Texas Aggie Cadet Corps. Instead of going on active duty, I had applied for an educational delay from entering the USAF to attend grad school at TAMU in computer science. I stayed at A&M until February 1969, when I was called to active duty in the Air Force. I completed my masters in the summer of 1976.
I was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antone, serving as Chief of Computer Operations. After 2 1/2 years, I was transferred to Biloxi, MS at Keesler AFB. I completed IBM 360 computer programming. Between classes, I got married to Regina Ann "Genie" Klemcke in San Antonio (July 1971). I returned to Keesler AFB as an IB...Expand for more
M 360 Computer Programmer Instructor for the next 3 1/2 years, and lived in Gulfport, MS. We had our first child, Denise, while at Keesler.
Next, I was transferred to Scott AFB, IL close to St. Louis, MO. I was there for 6 years, first as a computer systems analyst on the Headquarters MAC (Military Airlift Command) Systems Design Analysis (SDA) Team. After about 4 years, I became the Hqs MAC Computer Quality Assurance Division Chief, and instantly became the supervisor of the local union president. We had two more children: Michael in 1976 and Gina in 1978. I finished my tour there and transferred to the east coast.
In early September 1981 we arrived at McGuire AFB, NJ. I was promoted to the rank of major a few months later. I served as Chief, Data Automation over 20 to 30 enlisted and a few officers. Soon after arrival, we submitted the unit for the Best Data processing Installation (DPI) in the command (MAC again), and we were selected for that and later as the DPI in the Air Force in early 1982. Towards the end of my tour I was selected as the Best DPI Chief in the command.
I transferred to Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque. I was assigned to IFFN JTF (Identification Friend, Foe, or Neutral - Joint Test Force), a joint Army-USAF assignment. I first worked in the (computer) Systems Acquisition Directorate for the "testbed." Later, I became Assistant Director for the Systems Acquisition Directorate, and then Executive Officer for the unit. The unit has now changed names, and is now called TACCSF, Tactical Air Command and Control Simulation Facility.
I retired as a major in February, 1989 after 20 years in the military.
