Dennis's Story

After graduating from San Marcos High School, I attended San Francisco State College, smoked too much dope, slacked on my studies, and dropped out. I bummed around a lot, hitch-hiking and smoking more dope. I lived for a time in Seattle, WA, where I tried to become a salesman (I was dismal), but mostly I just hung around the U District and smoked more dope. I finally moved back to the Santa Barbara area, living in my sister's garage in Isla Vista and pumping gas for Hal's Chevron in Goleta and Buck Fisher's station in downtown Santa Barbara. I was there when the infamous Isla Vista riots went down. So, I smoked some more dope... I have always been employed, as I like to eat every day and I always thought that having a roof over my head was kinda cool. I always loved to drive, so, after a series of inconsequential jobs and musical gigs, I started driving cabs in Oxnard, CA. The cab driving job was open because the guy who had it before me got his head blown off with a shotgun down in Port Hueneme while on duty. I drove cab in Oxnard and Santa Barbara from 1972 to 1978. I met Mark Melni in 1978 at Santa Barbara City College, in the music department, where I was studying music and playing trumpet in the band, orchestra and jazz ensemble. Mark's father, Art Melni, was a musician and owned a charter bus company. I got a job in his yard servicing buses, and soon was trained to drive them. While I was working for Melni, I realized my responsibility as a professional driver, and I stopped sm...Expand for more
oking dope. I took a break from Melni for a year or two, during which time I lived in Riverside, CA, driving taxi cab for Riverside Red Cab. I then went back to Melni, vowing that I would never leave Santa Barbara again. After a couple more years with Melni, I went to Westway Lines in Ventura, CA, and drove there until 1984, when I went to my last job with the Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District. I worked for SBMTD until my retirement in January 2015. I met my lovely wife, Linda, by way of the SBCC computer bulletin board, around 1992, and we were married October 11, 1997. We live on the Mesa in Santa Barbara. I have two step-children, by whom we have three wonderful grandchildren. I thank GOD for my salvation, having been been baptized into the church of Christ around 1988 or so. I also thank Him for my wife Linda, my ongoing employment, the home we live in, the food on our table, our family, and every good thing He has provided me in this life. God has been good to me, a sinner both past and present... I am hanging out on Facebook these days. I like Facebook because it is free and it lacks the negativity of MySpace. Communication is less restrictive there than here at Classmates because you don't have to pay up for access. I would like it very much for people I know to sign up there and be my friend. We also have a group for Santa Barbara area high school graduates of the 1960s, with 53 members already, and anyone who fits that description is welcome there. I hope to see you!
