Dennis's Story

Hi everyone, After graduating I got a job installing carpet for a local contractor. Did that for about a year, then enlisted in the Navy. Went to boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois, not far from Chicago (you wouldn't believe how COLD), constant snow and ice. Then on to Rhode Island for training in Storekeeper school, then on to Little Creek, VA for counter-insurgency training. I received orders to be sent to Pleiku, Vietnam (same place my older brother was), but the orders were changed and I was stationed aboard the USS Mars, a supply ship. We supplied all the other ships off the coast of Vietnam and also several of the ports along the coast. We also sailed to many interesting places; Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines. Spent 4 years in the Navy and was discharged in 1973. I went back to installing carpet and played bachelor for 6 years before I met an amazing girl, Debbie. We were married in 1979 and had 2 wonderful years until she had congestive heart failure and her health went downhill from there. She developed RSD, a very debilitating and painful disease. In 1982 we moved back to her home town of Stafford Springs, CT to be near her family. We lived there for 25 years, where I continued selling and installing all types of flooring. When her health would allow, we would take vacations to the Caribbean and also took many trips in our motorhome, all over New England and down the coast to Florida. She was in constant pain but refused to let it stop her from trying to enjoy life. In 2007 I decided that I had had enough of the flooring business and we moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, where we stayed for 2 years, enyoying the sun and beach. Both of her parents had passed away and her healt...Expand for more
h was getting worse, so we decided to move back to Colorado Springs and be near my family. By 2012 her bad health got the better of her, and she suddenly passed away from congestive heart failure in November of that year. In 2016 I decided to take a part time job driving a 14 passenger van for persons with disabilities, picking them up in the morning and taking them to a day program, then taking them back home in the afternoon. I have gotten reaquainted with some old friends and am enjoying my semi-retirement. UPDATE: In 2018, while driving the van, I blacked out, resulting in the van striking a guardrail. Nobody was injured but everyone assumed I had fallen asleep, and I was let go from my job. The last thing I remembered was turning right from Barnes Rd onto Oro Blanco. The van continued straight onward until it hit the guardrail. From what I have been told, I called 911 then my supervisor. The police and emergency personnel say I was alert and perfectly coherent when they arrived...but I have no memory of anything from the point of turning the corner until about 3 hours later, when I became aware that I was driving home, wondering why I wasn't at work. I called my supervisor and he was amazed that I didn't remember what happened. I scheduled an appointment with Neurology at the VA in Denver, and an MRI revealed that I had suffered an epileptic seizure. I went almost 2 years without a drivers license but was finally cleared to get my driving privileges reinstated. My supervisor said please come back to work, and so I did. I haven't suffered another seizure since the first one and the doctor's say it was probably just a one time event, although I am on permanent medication. Hope to have many brighter days ahead!
