Denny's Story

Life Until May, 2010, I was living in San Jose, CA. My life there was eventful. I have a step daughter who was 4 when I first saw her and who is now 44. I spent 30+ years teaching mathematics at West Valley College, a community college in the Silicon Valley. I retired in July, 2010, sold my house, and moved to Las Vegas. I live in Summerlin, a town about 14 miles due west of the Strip and near the Red Rock Canyon. After GHHS, I flunked out of Pierce JC (Gary Mark and I would drive to the campus everyday, but when we pulled into the parking lot, the Mama's and Papa's would come on the radio and we would just have to go to the beach at Santa Monica). After a few nowhere jobs, I went into the Navy and became a diesel engine mechanic. I spent a year on the Mekong River in South Viet Nam. After the Navy, I went to Long Beach State and became a mathematician (BA and MA). I taught part-time at Long Beach State and Long Beach City College before getting a full-time teaching job at Glendale College. I stayed at Glendale for about a year and half, then accepted a full-time job at West Valley College. I stayed at West Valley for 30 years. I had a great time. I am dedicated to education. I enjoy the creativity it allows, the mix of people I get to intereact with, the continuous flow of and diversity of ideas, and the feeling of helping people and making a difference in their lives. I like Las Vegas. I am not much of a gambler and go to the Strip only when fri...Expand for more
ends visit. I like the warm weather and having stores and restaurants open 24/7. School Patrick Henry JHS and Granada Hills HS. I met some wonderful people there, particularly Gary Mark, who I am still close with. The teachers I most remember are Mr Fanella from geometry and Mr Rundlett (who would open bottles of chemicals with a pipe wrench) from chemistry. I don't recall much about my classes. I got out of school with a 2.04 GPA. I guess I should have studied a little more. There surely were many wondrful people that I should have talked with more. But I was too shy. Gary and I went to many Sports Nights, and at times, even got up the courage to ask girls to dance. After getting out of the navy, I spent 6 years at Long Beach State. I had a great time there. I lived a 1/2 block from the beach. I loved studying mathematics and still do to this day. I was fortunate to get a job as a teaching assistant at CSULB, teaching two classes each semester in graduate school. The experience was wonderful and I decided to go into teaching. I had a great career, never once getting up in the morning and thinking "Oh, I have to do this again." I liked school, so I stayed. 30+ years of good days. I now teach mathematics full time at the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. I like getting out of the night classes and looking toward the Strip and seeing the beam of light coming out of the Luxor. I retired from CSN in 2020 andI now live in Reno, Nv .
