The oldest of five siblings (all boys), Derrick naturally gravitated to the roll of leader and organizer. A product of the Pasadena unified school system, Pasadena City College and Cal State Northridge, Derrick was only an average student at best, and in retrospect it was his participation in sports, specifically track & field which kept him on the road of leadership development and motivated him to do what was necessary to keep pace in the class room. He ultimately completed bachelor's degree training in Practical Theology at the age of 45 at Azusa World Ministries Training Institute in 2005.
