Desiree's Story

1 year down...99 more to go!! My husband and I celebrated our first anniversary in June. Our love and marriage has been nothing short of a miracle and a blessing....I met Maurice less than a month after dating the worst man on the face of the earth. I was packed and on my way to graduate school at Howard in DC. My best friend (yes, it's still Joi Jackson, can you believe it?) dragged me to a Super Bowl party Feb 2007 where I literally bumped into him at the bar; he was sooo not my type: truck driver, motorcyle/crotch rocket club and I wasn't his (he thought I wpuld be bougie). We talked all night and didn't leave each other's side the whole evening. We talked on the phone for 3 weeks before we had our first date. When I left our second date, I knew I was in trouble. We moved into our townhouse 2 months where he proposed over boxes and in the middle of unpacking. I thought he was on his knees looking for something in a box so he literally had to ask me twice. We were married one month after that on a Friday afternoon. We "eloped" and had a ceremony at my home church. For those that have known me over the years, I've always said I wanted to get married in a sundress and flip flops...and I did!! Found my dress the night before at 8:55 in Nordstroms....Expand for more
Whole Foods made my bouquet and although we told our parents, maid of honor and best man to wear what they wanted, as long as it was respectable to the church, everyone showed up in the same colors that matched perfectly with my bouquet. We "honeymooned" the next day at the Georgia Aquarium and the Fox Sports Grill and it's been wonderful ever since. Needless to say...I never made it to Howard (LOL!) The moral of the story is to not let your circumstances overcome your blessings. I have been engaged before and have called off things in the middle of planning a big wedding with all the bells and whistles. When I first met my husband, my own heart and mind told me to not get into a relationship so soon after ending my previous relationship. I'm glad I didn't listen or allow myself to be limited to "my normal type". My husband is wonderful, spoils me rotten, and we share a bond in our marriage I only thought was for "other people". Since neither of us has children we are currently raising our "starter child" our 6 month old brindle boxer, Bishop and if all goes well, we'll hopefully be welcoming our first child within the next year. God Bless everyone and pray all is well! Shoot me a note and take care...Oh, and VOTE for OBAMA -"Viva la revolucion!"
