Dex's Story
I met my wife while stationed at Mather AFB, CA.
It was Feb. 18, 1969, I saw this beautiful girl, standing near the entrance of Fern Becan Junior High School in Sacramento, Ca. As all from Bastrop, especially the girls, know, I was the most bashfull guy around. Not this time though, I had to know this girls name, and I was not going to let the moment slip by.
What happened was:
I had driven to a the school to pick up 2 friends, and, I guess you could say, a blind date. I was to take them to the Library in Southgate Plaza Shopping Center for some book work.
I went to pick up Marley, Kathy Mowery, Maralee Sannar, and this mystery person. I had spoke to, only the night before, for about a hour and a half by phone.
I arrived before the appointed time, sat in my car, waiting for the final bell to ring. Then It happened, the bell rang, and everyone was going to and fro. A mad house it was, but Out of this ciaos stood a lone girl, near the front entrance of the school, and close to the flag pole.
Oh! She probably would not have turn many head; neither, would she be noticed by many. Just plain, rapped in a fuzzy furry white coat, and a plaid skirt, with black hair. She was just someone that melted into the scene, but for me THAT girl would end up being my wife. She was the most beautiful person. She took my heart that day. Yes, and she is still the only one in my life.
I had to speak to her before the others came out and she would have melted away form me for ever. This was not like me...Expand for more
. I was 21 years old and still afraid to approach a girl. Mostly afraid they would not like me, but for this one, I had to take that chance.
As I approached her, she had her back to me. My heart pounding, my mind racing, and my body telling me to leave. My muscles were twitching, and they all seemed to be going in all directions at the same time. Although, this was happening to me, I pressed on. That 50 or so feet of land I was crossing seemed to be forever. I had to meet this girl. I can not let her get away without a way to contact her again, before my friends arrived.
As I got near her, she turned sort of, for the first time, to face me. I opened my mouth and blurted out ÿwhat is your name.ÿ
She responded, PAMELIA MAYHEW. At that very moment, my friends came out.
Kathy said, "I see you have met Pam." The third girl, I was to pick up that day. The name, did not collate in my brain when she told me her name, PAM. Only after Kathy spoke it, did it ring. I could not believe my fortune, this was the girl I had spoke with over the phone.
I had no idea that the voice on the other end of the phone last night (Feb 17, 1969, could be so beautiful, nor so pleasant. We walked to the car, and on into life from that day until now.
This happened forty years ago, about 3:16pm, on the 18th of February, 1969, near the entrance of Fern Bacon Junior High School; 4140 Cuny Ave.; Sacramento, California.
Thank You Kathleen "Kathy" Mowery & Maralee Sannar for the start of the rest of my life.
