Diana's Story

Life After graduation I relocated to Santa Barbara where I live for 10 years. I graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice and obtained a position as deputy sheriff for Ventura County. In the Police Academy I was voted "Female most likely to be your backup!" I became captain of the pistol team traveling throughout California shooting competively. In 1977 at the Police Olympics I competed against 3,000 fellow police officers in Santa Ana and won the bronze medal for target shooting. Oh, yeah! And another bronze in the ladies tennis competion. A girl has to do something to keep herself entertained! In 1980 I left the field of law enforcement and began a new career in the field of aviation. In a period of approx. 3 months I had obtained my flight ratings which included Private, Instrument, Commercial and Flight Instructor. I began working as a flight instructor in the Imperial Valley, but was offered a job in Visalia to instruct Japanese students and do charter flights as well. This lead to another offer to fly for ConAir, transporting prisoners throughout the United States in Navajo Chieftains for various law enforcement agencies. I was the only female pilot in the company, and handled a hijacking and shootout incident in 1984 when a prisoner being returned to Rock Springs, Wyoming for murder charges attempted to take over the aircraft and use me as a hostage by putting his waist chains around my neck. Grabbing my partners Smith and Wesson put a successful end to that situation . . he'll remember me every time he smiles! Once I achieved 1500 hours of flight time I was able to leave ConAir an...Expand for more
d persue my Airline Transport Rating. Next came the Flight Engineer Certificate with a turboject type that I received in the Boeing 727. While in Flight Engineer training I received a job offer and flew corporate until 1994. I decided that 15 years in the air was enough. That it was time to stay home and take care of a little girl whom is now 10 years old. Recently I have been doing a little flying in the San Diego area. I continue to keep my flight ratings current which keeps me in the top 2 percent of the female pilots in the United States today! My daughter was born in Carmel, California. I had been living in Monterey at the time where I met her father whom was in the military. At the time I took a break from flying and worked at Fort Ord as a Congressional Inquiries Correspondent. It was a liason position between the U.S. Dept. of Army and Congressman Leon Panetta's office. I was able to travel to Germany where I lived for 1 year. (Das ist ser gut) It gave me the opportunity to visit Paris, Nuremburg, Munich, Salzberg, Innsbruck, Venice, Zurich and a lot of other beautiful cities. But, there was nothing like coming home to the good ole U.S.of A. I now reside with my daughter in the San Diego area along with 2 Persian kitties. Remember Mr. Grevat in junior high school? Yep! I live in his home town. I have been very lucky to have had an interesting, challenging and rewarding life. I have never attended a class reunion, but maybe . . possibly the 35th? Probably because I believe it's not necessarily how you start the game, but how you complete it! Go Wildcats! Diana Flud/Rittenhouse
