Diana's Story

When I lived in Phoenix, I had moved there from Collinsville, IL (just outside of St Louis) with my Grandmother to train in figure skating. I had spent my summers before that at Michigan State with my coach, Don Stewart and he moved to Phoenix. The original plan was to spend one year but that quickly changed. I missed my family but I loved Phoenix. After high school, I spent a year touring with Ice Capades and injured my back on a snow mobile toward the end of the tour. I went back to St Louis to heal with the complete intention of moving back to Phoenix and starting to teach skating. Then I met my future husband, John Schaefering. We were married in 1977 and just celebrated our 40th anniversary. We have three amazing sons, Blake, Drew and Tyler. Blake, his wife Yvonne and their daughter Lumen live in Oslo, Norway. He is a model and also trains competitive boxers, hockey players, tennis players and UFC fighters as their strength and conditioning coach. Drew lives in Brooklyn, NY when he isn't traveling, which is about 70% of the time. He is on the team with Loreal International as an artist and instructor, does hair at Fashion Week in NY, London, Paris and Milan and has trained at salons in the US, Australia, Bali, Bolivia and Dubai. He also is one of the stylists for the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show! Our youngest son, Tyler, works for KCI in wound care management and he lives here in St Louis (thank God!) with his new bride, Jennifer. He is a very gifted athlete who, after playing soccer in college and graduating, went to Australia and played professionally for 18 months. He continues to play hockey a couple of nights a week and is one of my instructors doing private lessons and the Learn to Play Hockey program. In 1992, I hung up my figure skates for hockey skates and start running my own hockey power skating schools, Schaefering Power Play Hockey. It was the best decision I could have ever made! I was able to be one of the original board members for the Chesterfield Hockey Association, which has given thousands of kids a place to play. To be able to be a coach for the Gateway Locomotives, a developmentally disabled team where we competed in the first international tournament and all the players and coaches have our names on a trophy in the Hockey Hall of Fame. I have worked with players in the NHL and every level down to beginners all over the country and trained ...Expand for more
coaches through USA Hockey. Four professional teams have brought me in to work their summer hockey programs and for 20 years I have taught for Hockey Ministries International nationwide. Plus all of the players I work with privately, teams and clubs who hire me has given me the opportunity to touch thousands of players lives. This past August I was inducted into the St Louis Amateur Hockey Hall Of Fame. I have never been so honored---and it was for doing something that I absolutely love! I consider myself so blessed to work with these players and I am now getting the kids of kids I taught years ago!! It is so cool but at the same time makes me realize how fast life is going. Outside of my family and teaching, my heart belongs to my dogs. We have 3 rescues, Kodi, a chow husky mix who is 17, Addikus, boxer/english bulldog mix and she is 9 and Rufus, an American Bulldog who we think is 6. If I had the resources, I would have a rescue shelter. Because I want to save them all!! My passion, where I completely lose myself, is gardening. There isn't a thing planted on our property that I haven't planted myself. It is a never ending process as plants need to be moved or areas need to be added to and everything needs to be taken care of as far as weeding and mulching. If I am not at the rink, I am in the yard. And that doesn't count the plants that come inside in the winter and then back out over the summer! I have over 30 orchids (16 are in bloom right now), succulents, cactus, plumeria, fig and jade trees and agave. The best part of having all of these plants is sharing. I love to give starters to people to enjoy as much as I do. John and I love to travel and hope to be able to do more when he retires. I don't know if I will ever retire completely---I will probably be on the ice with a walker! With a son in Norway, we tend to spend any vacation time going there right now. We have been fortunate to have gone to Oslo, Paris, Rome, Venice, London, Buenos Aires and Mendoza in the last ten years. I think he thinks I am joking when I say we should get an RV so we can travel the US and be able to take our dogs with us! We love to go out to dinner and try new restaurants and creative cocktails with either bourbon or gin. Concerts, dancing, movies, cooking and entertaining are all things we love. Each day that I wake up I am thankful for another day. And I make my choice to be happy!
