Diane's Story

Life After graduating from CN I went to USC, and graduated in 1993 with a BA in Journalism (Advertising/ Public Relations). After that I went to work for Blue Cross Blue Shield in Columbia. During my freshman year of college, I met and became friends with Steven, but we did not start going out until late 1990. We got engaged in September 1993, and were married on January 7, 1995. We lived in Columbia while Steven finished graduate school, and in 1996 we moved to Georgia. I worked for a local newspaper as an ad designer until I had my first child, William, in March 1998. After that I stopped working to become a stay-at-home-mom. We lived in Georgia until May 2000, when Steven got a job at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA - we live in Richmond. I had my second little boy, Peyton, in May 2002. About two years after Peyton was born (Summer 2004) I started taking dance classes (tap & Jazz), and I have been shuffling along ever since. I perform in the studio's show each Spring at the Landmark Theater in downtown Richmond. It is so much fun and a great workout too. In August 2007 I also started dancing with the XF Company of dance. Our December show, The Disconnect, consisted of five sold-out performances at The Firehouse Theater in Richmond. My mom and step-dad finally sold their house over by the VA Hospital in Columbia the summer of 2007, so they could retire to their home on Edisto Island. I try to make it home at least once a year - usually in the spring or over the summer. Amy Yarnall, Crickett Hayes and Alicia Carroll were all in my wedding, and I try to stay in touch with old CN friends when I can. MySpace has proved to be a good connecting point. I almost always see Amy's mom when I come home - she and my mom are good friends, and they meet for breakfast often. She keeps me posted on news she hears about any old friends. I made it to our 5th and 10th reunions, but never heard anything about a 15th. I hope we have a 20th - GOOD GOD WE ARE GETTING OLD!!! School If you look at my list of schools you can see I was all over the place. This was due to my parent's divorce and we moved too many times to count! Sloan High School used to be a K thru 12 private school and went by the name "Sloan's School" but the only listing on this website was for the High School, so that is why I am listed there. I went to Kindergarten, first and seventh grades there. I finally planted my feet firmly into the ground when I got to High School. When I started my freshman year at Cardinal Newman in 1984 I was quite a sight with a perm and braces - It WAS the 80's. My first crush was on Kelly Ahrens, who was a senior at the time. I also thought Billy Love was really cute, and I also had a brief crush on Ben Powell. My favorite teachers were Ms. Hnat and Mrs. Manos. I became very close friends with Mrs. Manos(Mama Manos) my junior year when I assisted in her PE class and she was the cheerleading team sponsor. I adored Coach Greenwood, who was always so down to earth and easy to talk to. He definitely had a knack with students, and his office chairs were never empty. The wackiest teachers were Mr. Spangler and Mr. Herty without a doubt. Mr. Spangler always liked to mention the smell of burning flesh in the lab, and Mr. Herty was famous for his drugstore mirror in the corner of the room. Mr. Herty's class was definitely the most entertaining for me. I'll never forget how Grey Menzie, Kevin Graves and Jimmy Morris used to constantly antagonize him, much to my amusement. One of the funniest memories I have involves me falling down. We were at an out-of-town basketball game and the varsity girls were playing, I think. It was a time out and we had run out onto the court to do a cheer. When we finished, as I was running off the court the rubber on the front of my shoe caught the floor in such a way that I literally fell flat on my face. It was hysterical to say the least, and Coach Watson was very dissappointed that he had turned off the camera he was using to film the game. (for those of you that were there, you will remember "My Shoe! My Shoe!") The hardest thing for me in high school was when Mrs. Manos announced that she would not be sponsoring the Cheerleading squad the following year. My junior year was by far my favorite. Our squad was awesome: Crickett, Sherri, Amy, Kelly, Kirstin, Tammy, Trish and me. Crickett and Sherri graduated, and I was the only one of us to cheer our Senior year. I was selected for Captain, but in many ways it was bittersweet. I ended up with a great squad and we had a great year, but it was never quite the same. Graduation for our class was awesome. We were the first class to wear black caps and gowns. We looked great! I'll never forget the end of the ceremony when Donnie Elgin, I believe, let out a big "Yee-Haa" and everyone threw their caps in the air. Prior to the ceremony we were told many, many, many times that we COULD NOT do that. I think they even threatened to take our dipolmas, but we got away with it. Unfortunately, I never got my cap off in time - I had just about welded it to my head with bobby pins so Mrs. McLendon wouldn't mess with it. She kept pulling everyone's caps forward onto their foreheads, "the way they were supposed to be worn." I successfully dodged her before the ceremony began. After all, it was the 80's, we were SUPPOSED to have big hair!!! College I remember when I was looking at college's in High School. My first choice originally was Clemson University - I wanted to be an architect. Later, I decided I wanted to study public relations and advertising (Journalism). I looked at the University of Georgia, University of Tennessee, the University of Florida and the University of South Carolina. The University of South Carolina won out because it was an in-state school, so tuition was less expensive. (My mom and step-dad were going to have three kids in college at once, so the more economical the better. My brot...Expand for more
her, Brendan, had to give up his dreams of going to PC as well.)) My freshman year was full of activity. I started the year by going through sorority rush, and I ended up pledging Delta Gamma. Around that same time I began tryouts for the USC Cheerleading Team. I had spent the summer working out with a former USC cheerleader at a gymnastics studio in Columbia. During the week of tryouts, however, I had to drop out. A previous knee injury I had when I was in high school did me in - torn cartilage and damaged ACL. My cheerleading days were over. :( FUNNY STORY: Shortly after my sorority initiation I was elected as Social Chairman, so I was responsible for planning all of our sorority social events. Hootie and the Blowfish was a very popular college cover band at that time. I ended up hiring them to play at our formal for a mere $800!! They got their big break shortly after that. The majority of my socializing during college was within the Greek system. The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity was the primary fraternity I socialized with - this is where I met my husband. I spent lots of time in 5 Points, as well. I think I spent more time there when I was under-age trying to get into bars with fake ID's, than I did when I was twenty-one. In fact, after I turned 21, one of my younger sorority sisters borrowed my ID to go out in 5 points, and ended up getting carded by one of my old high school friends who was a bouncer at the bar. (Jim Hutto) I definitely over-indulged in my social life. Looking back, my grades could have been much better if I had put in the slightest bit more effort - but I was just having too much fun!! After I turned twenty-one I settled down and really got into my upper level Journalism courses. I was really happy with my major, and never changed it. I took all of my minor courses in the media arts department - primarily, scriptwriting. (Movies, documentaries, etc.) I loved it! I graduated in the Spring of 1993 with no plans to go into graduate school. I was tired of school at this point, and could not see myself going any further. As I have gotten older, I have pondered going back to school. I have put some thought into going to art school. The creative part of my major was one of the things I enjoyed most - creative writing, graphic design, etc., so I think I would like to explore this area even further if I decide to go back to school. Workplace The first job I ever had in high school was working at Tapp's Department store at Woodhill Mall. I worked there off and on for about three years. (summers, holidays & weekends) Between high school graduation and the start of my freshman year in college I worked at Garcia's Mexican Restaurant - which no longer exisits, but used to be over by Columbia Mall. Cathi Rossi had talked me into applying for a hostess job, and it turned out to be quite a fun place to work over the summer. Later that same summer (1988) I went to work for my mom at The Traveler's Insurance Company. Her secretary had been in a bad car accident, and I filled in. I was working at Traveler's in the mornings and Garcia's at night. When school started I dropped the Garcia's job and worked part time with the Traveler's. The summer after my freshman year at USC, I started working at a card/gift shop called Fluff-N-Stuff in the newly renovated Richland Mall. Crickett Hayes and I applied at the same time and worked there through the summer. Right after my sophomore year at USC began, T.G.I.Fridays was getting ready to open at Richland Mall. I started working there as a hostess (Amy Yarnall and Heather Yager worked as hostesses with me) and eventually ended up waitressing. I was there for at least a year, maybe longer. Sometime in late 1990 or early 1991, I went to my mom and step-father's company (they own several Precision Tune's in SC, NC and GA). I worked for them through my college graduation in 1993 doing payroll and accounting work. Right after graduation my parents were all over me to get a job. Looking back now, I don't know why I didn't look for a job relating to my college major. I never did an internship while I was in school, and looking back I wish that I had. Instead, I went for the first "real job" I could find, and that was working for Blue Cross Blue Shield. I got a job working in Consumer Products, which handled Medicare and Champus supplemental policies. I spent a lot of time on the phone trying to explain insurance jargon to old people. I did get to do one freelance graphic design project related to my college degree shortly after graduation. It was with a graphics company in Greenville, SC. The SCE&G Bus System was launching a new advertising campaign for the buses in Columbia. They turned the buses into full size moving billboards. My parent's got a bus for their business and I got to design it. So, for about 2 years, you could see my handiwork driving all over Columbia. In 1996 my husband finished his Ph.D and got a job at a small college in Barnesville, Georgia. I found a job at The Griffin Daily News newspaper as an Advertising Coordinator. Basically I laid out the paper each day, deciding what was going where. About a year later I moved up to the Composing Department as an Ad. Designer. I loved this job. Working for the paper was my favorite job to date. After I had my first child I stopped working to become a full time, stay-at-home-mom. Once my son was about a year and a half old I went to work part-time as an instructor at a scrapbooking store. This was more of a hobby than a job. It was a lot of fun, and gave me an outlet for creativity. I worked there until we moved to Virginia. I have not worked since. One day when both of my kids are older I will probably go back to work, but I have no idea what I might do. Right now I am enjoying doing the stay-at-home-mom thing. It's not always easy, but it gives me some free time to do senseless things like filling out my profile on Classmates.com. ; )
