Diane's Story

Life Hello class of '78! My name is Diane Weidert, but you probably remember me as Diane Guido. I am currently living in Scottsdale, AZ with my husband Keith and my 10 year old daughter Michele. We have been out here for 9 years. Before coming out to the desert, I was living in Illinois. In fact, I had a home in the Valley View subdivision with my first husband. It was a short-lived marriage, under a year, thankfully no children. After my divorce, I thought I would move to AZ were the majority of my family was, then I met my husband Keith and decided to stay in Illinois for a bit. We lived in Darien. Well. then Michele came along and we decided that she needed to be with all the Guido relatives. I have 32 first cousins, and most of them are in AZ. Thankfully, Keith's company, IBM, was very accommodating in letting him make the transfer. We lived with my sister and her family for 6 months before finding our home. We like it here. I do miss the green grass and big trees of Illinois. It is too much desert for me here! My career since I graduated from College was mainly retail. I started work at Marshall Field's in their Management training program. I went from being an Assistant Mananger in Furniture, to an assistant buyer at the State Street store, back to Manager positions at the Oakbrook store. I was with them for 5 years. I became a buyer for Montgomery Ward's at their downtown corporate office which was next to Cabrini Green! I stayed their for 18 months. It was a great experience, I went to New York on a buying trip, met great people, and worked long hours which is why I left. Then, I became a store manager for a small furniture store in Downers Grove. I was promoted to the furniture buyer, and then a year later the company went bankrupt and closed. That's it! I was done with retail. I changed careers and worked for Talent Tree which was a recruiting firm. I worked at their Oakbrook, Rosemont, and State Street locations. Then they had...Expand for more
a major reorganizing, lots of good friends left, and eventually so did I. I went to work for a smaller recruiting firm, and then Michele came along, and I decided it was time to be a mom! That's when we moved to Arizona. But I couldn't stay home for long. Once Michele started school, I was bored! Lots of my mom friends enjoyed shopping, eating, going to movies, etc.. I couldn't do that every day, so I volunteered at school in Michele's classes. Her first grade teacher told me that with my degree I could be a substitute teacher, so for the last 4 years that's what I have been doing. Now, I am thinking about getting certified! Michele will be going into 5th grade so why not! As far as hobbies, well I guess I can say Michele is my hobby. I bought her a horse, she has had it for almost a year. I started her on riding lessons when she was 5 and she loved it. So after almost 5 years of paying for riding lessons to ride other horses, I decided she needed her own horse. She has an Arabian mare, 11 years old, and her name is Fancy. They are great together. So, most of our free time is spent at the stable. She has done other activities - piano, gymnastics, swimming lessons, church choir, school choir - but she seems to like riding the best. So, she will continue piano and school choir along with riding. I don't know how people can put their children in so many activities! Oh no, I don't have too much space left to write! My husband, Keith! He has been with IBM for 28 years, met him through a personals ad back in Chicago, 5 years older than me (I rub it in any chance I get), he was born in Western Springs, IL, went to Lyons Township, loves to fish, is on a bowling league, is a sports fanatic-college and professional, and a great husband. O.K., that's all the space he gets! We also have 2 JRT's - jack russel terriers - Russ and Terri. Well, that's me in a nutshell. Can't think of anything else right now, besides my daughter wants to swim! Bye! Diane
