Diane's Story

For the background information, I'll make it short and sweet. Graduated from WCHS with a plan to attend UNC-CH and major in journalism. Went to UNC on a full scholarship with my son, Travis (who was born in my junior year of high school), in tow. Attended for a semester and a half and decided it wasn't for me, so I dropped out, moved back to Warren County, got married to Todd (Davis) in 1986. After a couple of crappy jobs around town, I started working as a full-time staff and features writer at the Warren Record in 1987. I really loved this job, and I was doing what I had wanted to do - be a writer! Todd and I had another child, my daughter Casey, in 1990. In 1992, we left Warren County, moved to Wake County. I began working full-time in the Trust department at BB&T in downtown Raleigh. Eventually, I took on a part-time job at the News & Observer doing ad layout and design for the prepress department. In 1994-5 timeframe, the internet came along and I was smitten. I started working part-time in the N&Os new media department on their internet helpdesk. When that division was sold to Mindspring in 1996, I made a tough decision and quit my job at BB&T and went to work full-time at Interpath (then owned by Capitol Broadcasting) as a member of the web development team. This was the beginning of an exciting path for me - I absolutely loved the web and learned everything I could. Within months, I moved to another position at BB&T doing intranet web development. A couple of years later, I ended up in Research Triangle Park at a telecommunications company doing intranet web development. I was having a blast and meeting lots of new a...Expand for more
nd wonderful people. In 2001, Todd and I separated, and just a year later we divorced (amicably). We had been together for 20 years (since our freshman year of high school), but unfortunately we grew up and apart and realized at the end that we just didn't have that much in common. We are still friends and get along well. In 2003, I married a charming geek named Jon who I met at work. We're both computer nerds, enjoy a lot of the same things, and I can honestly say that I've never been happier. I've been working at Meredith College (in Raleigh, NC) since July of 2001 as a web programmer and manager of web services. My job is to manage web publishers across campus, setup and maintain mySQL databases, and develop and maintain PHP code on our web servers. I love what I do, even if some days I'm ready to pull my hair out. As a benefit of my employment at Meredith, I can attend college for FREE! So, in 2007 I decided it was finally time to bite the bullet and return to school. I'm now seeking an undergraduate degree from Meredith as part of the college's 23+ program. I may be 50 when I finally graduate from college, but at least I will finish something I started so long ago. It's not about the degree anymore - it's about reaching goals that I set for myself so long ago. My son Travis will be 25, and my daughter just started her senior year of high school. I turn 41 in just a couple of weeks and I'm happy to say that while I had to make a lot of sacrifices early on in my life because I started having kids so early - I'm really glad things have turned out the way they did. I'm quite looking forward to the next 20 years of my life.
