Diane's Story
I graduated from Burnsville in 1978. The next fall I began my undergraduate degree at Eau Claire, WI. In 1982 I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Library Science. I was lucky in that I was offered a teaching position in Door County, WI the fall after I graduated.
I moved to Sturgeon Bay. My dad was out and about at my apartment in SB and met my upstairs neighbor. He was a teacher at Southern Door, too. My Dad introduced us.
My car broke down on the second day of school. Tony Kiszonas, the upstairs guy my dad introduced me to, was my only way to get to school for the next few days. I was engaged to my college boyfriend who moved to Texas after college.
Tony and I began a friendship riding back and forth to school, going to the school's football games, making dinner for each other, etc. This led to love, so I ended my engagement. In March of 1983 Tony proposed to me. We got married on August 12, 1983 at the Methodist Church in Burnsville. Three years later our daughter, Alecia, was born (1986).
Tony and I earned our Master's Degrees from St. Mary's University. I taught 7-8th grade Language Arts/Social Studies, 2nd grade, and 6th grade. After earning my Master of Arts in Education with a focus in Literature, I moved to the position of the K-12 Library Media Specialist. I was an advisor for over 50 teachers earning their Masters Degree, a 1 credit introductory class for the masters progr...Expand for more
am, and a 3 credit writing course. These were positions through St. Mary's University. I also taught 3 credit recertification classes for teachers through Tools for Learning, a component of Cardinal Stritch.
31 years later, Tony and I are happily married. Our relationship and marriage gets better and better.
Our daughter graduated from Southern Door, earned her undergraduate degree from Ripon College, her Masters Degree through the University of Iowa in Ames, Iowa, and her Ph.D from the University of Washington in Pullman, Washington. She is currently working for the University of Washington as a Post-Doc and is teaching for them.
On 9-11-12 I had a freak accident and shattered my heel. My foot looked like a block at the end of my leg. I had surgery, a 5 day hospital stay, 4 months where I had to sit as I wasn't able to even put the injured foot on the floor, 6 months of Physical Therapy, and I still couldn't walk. It looked like I'd never walk again. To get stronger, I began swimming 2 miles every day to strengthen my injured foot/leg. Gradually I was able to walk and we are even ballroom dancing again. I'm still in the middle of the 3 year recovery period. I retired early.
Right now Tony is still at Southern Door and I have three canine babies at home that need mothering. I'm also volunteering when my foot allows. We hope to move to a warmer state where we could hike, bike, continue ballroom dancing, and enjoy life.
