Diane's Story

Life Well, after graduating from Taft, I spent the next 4 years at Pierce College, changing majors every semester. I earned an AA in General Education. I met my first husband in a community service class in 1975, and in June of 1976, after converting to Judism, we were married. Four year later, it ended in a divorce. I could not take his drug use. In 1981, while taking square dance lessons, I met my current husband , Bob. Our first date if you can believe it, was to the San Fernando Swap Meet on a hot August day. A girl will do anything for the man she loves. In December of 1981, when my divorce became final, I asked him to marry me. On January 12, 1982, I dragged him to city hall, so he wouldn't get away. In Jan of 1983, I converted to the Church of Latter Days Saints (Mormans), with the help of my apartment manager and my husband. We lived in Van Nuys, until we moved to our first home in Sylmar in 1986. We stayed there until 1990, when the neighborhood started to go down. So we moved up to Rosamond, 11 miles north of Lancaster. At this time, I was able to realize my dream of opening a Family Day Care. Things were going great, until a drughouse opened across the street, and I feared for the children's safety. We moved to another house, but the location sucked, and I had to close in 1997. Not having any children of my own, my husband and I tried foster care, but got the Omen/Devil Seed, and had to terminate that. In 1998, at my husband's encouragement, I went back to school to pursue my dream of becoming a teacher. In December of 1998, I was diagnosed with clinical depression, which explains why I was so unhappy all during my childhood and teenage years. With medication, I am back amoung the functioning humans, whatever that means. In June of 2001, I earned my BA in Liberal Studies, in 2001, I completed Teacher Preparation, and in June of 2004, I earned an MA in Education, all from California State University, Bakersfield. During this time, I was workin...Expand for more
g as a substitute teacher for the So. Kern Unified School District, until 2005. Not being able to get a postion in Calfornia due to the budget, and my higher education, and after looking on the internet for a state that would take my CA Teacher Certificate, my husband and I decided to move to Arizona. I contacted my brother who at the time was a real estate agent, and asked him to find us some places to look at. Well after looking, we settled on the town of Tonopah. If you want isolation, move here. The closest store, other than a general store, is 18-20 miles away. You have lots of rabbits, quails, roadrunners, and coyotes, for neighbors. We moved here in April of 2005, and I went to work for Teachers On Call, a registry that places substitute when I teacher is absent. I did that for the remainder of the school year. At the end of the school year, I was offered a 5th grade position at the local elementarty school. I thought 5th grade no problem, I taught that as part of my student teaching. Boy, was I wrong. The first day of school, several students told me they were going to get me fired, that the only reason that they were there, was because their mom made them come. I also became a spit wad target. These students had no qualms about using 4-letter words when addressing me, and forget about consequences for not following rules, or not doing homework, they just laughed. Well, after 6 months of this, I had enough of being physically ill every morning before work, and opted out of my contract early. Since then, I went back to working for Teachers ON Call, and will still until a permanent position comes along. I still am childless, though not for lack of trying. I am one of those "unexplained infertility" people. I do however, have 2 dogs, and 1 cat. I look forward to hearing from classmates, expecially Nancy Robertson, now Andrews. Having gone from kindergarten, all the way through senoir year together, I have many fond memories, as I do of other classmates.
