Dianne's Story
Life
In December after graduation I married Paul Jefferson "Jeff" Martin. We soon had two children. The oldest, Paul is married and has given me a step-grandson and a grandson. My youngest, Michael is single. Both sons have followed my father in the printing business.
My parents thought that having children would stop my education, but I continued and graduated in 1974 form USA. I began working for the Mobile schools that fall. I taught for 32 years and worked as an elementary teacher and as a resource teacher at the Environmental Studies Center. I am now retired. Ive served in most offices in the Mobile County Education Association and served four three year terms on the Alabama Education Association Board of Directors. One highlight in my career was when I was selected as one of Alabama's finalist in the Teacher in Space Program. I later received the US Department of Education's Christa McAuliffe Fellowship. In 2000 I was awarded the National Crossfield Aerospace Educator of the Year.
Now that I'm retired I serve on the Board of Directors for several groups-- Alabama Retired Educators' Association, the AERA Foundation, Keep Mobile Beautiful,Inc. (now President) and The Crescent Theater Society. I also worked periodically for the Mobile Area Education Foundation with a program call EYE, Educating Youth through Engineering. rked with a few middle schools in the county with the math and science teachers on certain learning modules that are what educators refer to as STEM. They integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
I feel good about my professional life, but my personal life has had some hard times a few years ago. My mother died first. My husband was diagnosed with throat cancer. He completed chemo, radiation, and surgery. His sprites stayed good for a long time. I don't know how. His mouth hurt so much he could hardly eat. He had just retired from teaching after 32 years (18 at Blount and 14 at Murphy.) His hard fight is now over. Jeff died after a very hard struggle with the cancer after it reoccurred. This has been very hard for me and the family. My father then had bad health and has passed away also.
I am now have a wonderful guy, Ben Sumrall in my life. He is retired from AT&T. We enjoy flying in his plane. I have bought a house built in 1950. A good year. We have worked a lot updating to it.
We have a cat that keep me amused. I enjoy traveling. I like to work in my yard. Love HGTV. We are both active in the democratic party.
For you people that have moved, the school system has renovated Davidson. The former Azalea Road Jr. High and Azalea Middle, now Denton Middle, has had structural problems and was torn down and rebuilt.
