Dick's Story
I guess I hope that old friends remember me, and that is all I can ask. I wasn't one of the popular kids and I missed a lot of school, so there you go. I would like to be remembered as someone who was a friendly person, funny and smart about things I was interested in.
I always wanted to be an Indian when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a dumb idea. As it turns out, they were right.. no way you can alter the accident of your birth!
I blow off steam by swimming or hiking. I've always been a Thoreau type and I'm fortunate to live right next to Golden Gate Park, just 3 miles from the Pacific Ocean. When I really need to blow up, I just call a sibling - works every time!
The wildest thing I ever did in school was in 7th grade, at Saint Bartholomew's. I was infatuated with a girl, Joelle Bartuccio, who found me annoying and was planning a pajama party with most of our female classmates. I organized the boys to throw eggs, water balloons and smoke bombs at the girls during the scavenger hunt. This was done with the secret connivance of a few of the girls. It was a smashing success!

d half of 9th grade and we became like sister and brother.
If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have independence, resources, and privacy to be able to deal with the day-to-day.
Joan Baez has been my heroine since about 1969. I've met her and worked with her on issues, been to over 100 Baez concerts around the world, and yet my knees still tremble in her presence. She is the main inspiration in my political and spiritual life. She is still active, even as she approaches 68 years!
I moved to Florida for a while after graduation, but my first real move was to France in 1971. I lived there for one year and never wanted to return home. My mother died in 1973 and in 1974, I moved to San Francisco with 3 friends. I planned to stay a while and move to France, but it didn't turn out that way. I lived here fairly permanently, with a couple of years in Las Vegas, organizing against nuclear weapons (for the Catholic Church) and I even returned to Cleveland (Cleveland Heights) in 1978.
After a number of years as an anti-nuclear organizer, I began working with the homeless in 1986. I eventually became Executive Director of the City's largest family shelter and got to meet Steve Young, Joe Montana, Robin Williams, anny Glover and other famous supporters, which now allows me to name-drop, guilelessly!
