Dick's Story

I attended two high school and dearly loved and miss both. I went to Glendora High School, just east of Los Angeles, California from my Freshman year to half-way into my junior year and then went to live with my paternal grandparents in St. Petersburg Florida where I went to St. Pete High where I graduated from. Left Florida right after graduation to tour the USA with a $99 bus ticket on Greyhound, so that was my home for 99 days; ending up in Vincennes Indiana where I had planned to go the Junior College there so I could transfer to Indiana University's school of photojournalism. Took a summer vacation interest to travel to Tierra del Fuego at the southern most tip of South America but could not get my passport in time so hitchhiked to Alaska instead where also hitchhiking on a remote highway a small airplane piloted by this cool no-pressure preacher circled around landed on the road took me to his home, treated me like a son, bought me a pair of $50 boots so he could hook me into this super high paying job, firefighting, thru his friend at the BLM, Dept. of Interior. Made huge money and very close friends as the only white guy in a 4 man Alaska native polaski crew; enough to last me for a year and pay my college tuition so hooked on Alaska went back two more summers firefighting. Then I got married in Boone North Carolina 1969 and in 1972 we moved our family to Alaska where we were among the last 80 or so homesteaders of the 1860 160 acre Homestead Act, 200 miles from the nearest road in the remote Alaska wilderness. Became a single father in 1975, still on the homestead. In the mid 1970's my good platonic female friend was Alaska's first midwife and from those experiences I got into Lamaze Coaching and homebirthing where two of the babies I caught, (weren't mine tho) from other ladies, quickly became my lifetime unofficially adopted daughters to add to my other two; tho I lived separately from them a...Expand for more
s their was no relationship there. I was into construction and helping out with another friends baking business so when our construction crash came; I became full-time involved in that business which grew and grew into a wholesale snack bakery distributing all over Alaska and eventually into a popular cafe-deli as well; our menu had 41 flavors of soup every day. The trick was they were flash frozen into individual servings so our freezer looked more like a file cabinet. I was also a fairly active part-time human-rights volunteer paralegal for 40 years. I had two more girls, a step and another bio; also did remedial tutoring and had three short-term kids centers / study-halls; the last one integrated into a small micro-farm with milking goats where the kids learned animal care as well as weird book learning like how to do Egyptian Arithmetic and Egyptian rope surveying. Also during this time I was a tiny way more off than on part of The Farm Commune from 1975, again way off and on thru 1992, and did historical ship restoration, one stretch for 6 months and another for 3 months for the Sunburst Commune which sort-of started the wholesale organics and once owned 550,000 acres of high desert in Nevada and before that the 12,000 acre ranch between Ronald Reagon's and John Travolata's ranch. As one might be able to notice I am not the retiring type and my last project, for my retirement "legacy" is resurrecting the micro-farm / study hall project and expanding that into a learning and farm share membership club with a separate sewing house for quilting, spinning and weaving etc, a wood light metal work separate shop, other shops, and a few guest cabins all on a part of a small Permaculture farm. WELL - that's an abbreviated me till now. I miss both St. Pete and Glendora high and would greatly welcome any exchanges between anyone interested in touching base. Thanks for reading and best wishes to everyone. rich
