Dick's Story

Life I grew up at 14081 Strathmoor with a great group of kids during the 40's and 50's when our houses were always open, as a matter of fact it wasn't until 1953 that I ever had a key to our front door. There are still fond memories of Mason's TastyCreme, the Cardinal Barbershop, Witt's Texaco and Farm Maid's Soda Fountain. What would life have been like if we hadn't also had Mahoney's Bakery, Sam's Drugs and the little C.F. Smith grocery store on Fenkell. Those days also had wonderful purveyors of things to your house like the Fuller Brush man, Pete Ruegolo the produce man, The Good Humor Man, Awrey Bakery, Sander's Bakery, Mills Bakery, Farm Maid (and other) dairy companies, Cook Coffee Company and the Jewell Tea Company. What ever happened to the good life? Both Grade School and High School Days were good ones, even if they were sprinkled with hard times and personal traumas. College found me at Wayne State, Ferris State and Indiana University's Graduate School. Those were the great days of communes, Ben Spock and Angela Davis to name a few. We saw music evolve from the Big Bands into early Rock and Roll and radio emerge into the visual spectrum of television. Neighborhood theaters were safe to walk to and the screens seemed enormous until we got to experience Cinerama and the big screens of the Fox and United Artists Theaters downtown. I remember the Fenkell Avenue electric Streetcar that ended at Snowden? and the old Ford buses with the alcohol button used for starting them in cold weather. Detroit was a wonderful city to grow up in during school days and I have nothing but fond memories of it. I have been in many professions and lines of work in my life including being a pharmacists apprentice, janitor, sound engineer, radio dj, audio-visual technician, teacher, manufacturer, innkeeper, real estate salesman and all around community volunteer. Looking back I probably wouldn't change a thing except for perhaps being more outgoing. I have now settled onto a 25 acre parcel of land along a desert creek in south central New Mexico as my retirement spot. Blessings to all of you still around, you are always welcome in Seventh Heaven. of you one day. Dick. College I was a commuter student at Wayne State in 1959 and 1960 in Pharmacy but decided that pushing pills just wasn't for me. Knowing that the Dean of Students at Wayne State had moved to take up the post of President at Ferris, I decided to follow him and moved on to the smaller campus life at Ferris State. There I completed a bachelors degree in business with minors in electronics and marketing/advertising. The days at Ferris were wonderful ones and it even enticed me to accept a professional staff position in Audio Visual for a five year term after graduation. I resigned in 1970 to attend graduate school at Indiana University in Bloomington completing a Masters and Specialists Degrees in Education. Learning has been a rewarding part of my life and I enjoy taking the occasional class in new and interesting fields. I have been blessed with many interesting work experiences throughout my life including custom sound engineering, marketing/advertising, radio dj, customer service for National Educational Television Film Service, a faculty member and Assistant Dean at the University of Evansville, a manufacturer of conveyor systems in Detroit, an Innkeeper and Real Estate Agent and now a filmmaker. In my lifetime I have been awarded Citizen of the Year in 1984 in Detroit and in 2001 in Ruidoso, NM for my volunteer work. I still love animals of all shapes and sizes and seem to always be blessed with stray 'somethings' wandering in and out of my life. Animals are beautiful creatures, filled with love and unknowing about hate and prejudice. If any friends are traveling west you are wecome anytime, there is always an RV hookup available or a room on the ranch. Blessings to all of you in your golden years and may you have the health to enjoy all the remaining days. THANKYOU to all the Cooleyites that took time to leave a message after viewing my entries. I am currently caregiving 24/7 for an 83 year old neighbor who has no family in our state and cannot live alone any longer. So it is difficult to answer all the 'view' notices that get posted. I do care and am thankful that you took time to read my story and hope you understand that at our age, caring for someone even older is a full time responsibility. Blessings to each of you! Dick
