Dolores's Story

I am living in Hidden Valley Lake, CA. My husband, Darrell Nelson (class of 48) and I moved here in 1993. We were married 53 years. He passed away in 2004. We took many cruises during our marriage. . . and always with a group of friends. My favorite way to travel. Our first cruise was to celebrate our 25th anniversary and it turned out to be a disaster. . . NOT because of our friends, but because Starsky and Hutch were on board and spent the 5 days of our cruise "filming" a show for T.V. What a nightmare. We did eventually get our money back and always made sure that there was not going to be another T.V. cast filming a show on future cruises. I have had over 25 hobbies during my lifetime and have recently taken up fishing. My hobbies include dressmaking, tailoring, making collectible teddy bears, genealogy, astrology, knitting socks, chrocheting, building a 2 story minature dollhouse, scrapbooking, learned shorthand. . . and many more. I even took "belly dancing" lessons with several friends. Can you imagine that? It was lots of fun . . . definitley my "craziest hobby". I have 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. I enjoy traveling and have just returned from visiting a good friend in Oregon. My 4th great-grandchild was born yesterday on 8/9/10. I now have 3 great-granddaughters and finally a...Expand for more
great-grandson. I have a big back yard and was forced to take up gardening. . . not one of my favorite hobbies. Early this spring, I went a little wild, painted 2 plastic chairs & a small table and 23 plastic planters "ballet slipper pink", Even painted one of my husband's birdhouses "pink". He would not be happy to see that. Converted my little Pekingese dog's side yard into a wonderful "sitting room for the 2 of us. Hannah and I have spent many hours this summer in "Hannah's yard. We watch dozen's of people walk by every day and they often wave and stop by to chat. Love watching all my new plants grow but I know I will loose many of them this winter. I even have a "worm farm" in a big planter. It's full of long, ugly, wiggly night-crawlers. When my good "fishing" friend comes down to visit me, we head down to Hidden Valley Lake with our chairs, fishing rods, worms and ipods full of our favorite music for a few hours of trout fishing. I 9/8/11... . . . Unfortunately, I lost my wonderful friend from Oregon in April. He was very very special and I do miss him. I have spent most of this summer learning about succulents and my front yard is full of them. It is very hot where I live and the perfect place to grow these beautifu plants. Most need little or no water. Dolores (McGraw) Nelson (class of Feb. 49)
