Don's Story

Friends have said to not retire because you'll be busier than ever. True... Doesn't feel like retirement with all our activities plus aerospace consulting which is actually fun because it keeps the mind active. The past few years have been quite busy with work on Town Committees and Task Forces, car restorations, and aerial photography. The State of Connecticut used one of the photos on the cover of the State's Office of Policy and Management (OPM) document. We keep trying to find time to travel, but Linda is much better at doing that a few times each year, going on cruises (I get a Tee Shirt from the cruise) with her friends while I hang around and fix the house, play at amateur gardening, upgrade the collection of Muscle Cars, and help local friends with almost anything that breaks. Several years ago we enjoyed two weeks in France for Linda's "Bisby Reunion" centered at Emilie and Mark's beautiful home. Emilie and Mark's house should be in a magazine showing beautiful French country homes. The Bisbyites who joined up included Thomsons (of course), Don Schuman, Gwyn Palmer, Leslie Palmer, and Bonnie Brewer.Fine French food, lots of drinking and lots of tales from the sixties! (the more the drinking went on, the better the tales became.) Don't believe old stories about French citizens being aloof; every person we met was delightful and helpful. Try to speak their language a bit and they are really nice in return. If you visit France, be certain to the American Cemeteries and you will never forget it. Don established "Antilla Avionics Consulting, LLC" and enjoys consulting with high tech Companies on several helicopter electronic System Architecture projects. Traveling to work with clients reinforces the opinion that air travel was...Expand for more
never that much fun, but a necessity to get to customers' sites. The work is still highly rewarding because it involves sensors and airborne systems to help our Military troops remain safe under difficult situations. After completing the dangerously powerful Series 200 Griffith restoration, Don upgraded our 1966 427 Fairlane, and Hemmings did a nice article on the car in "Hemmings Muscle Machines." We were honored to learn our 427 Fairlane was voted a few years back as the best Muscle Car in the U.S. in the December issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines". Our Bronze 1957 supercharged Thunderbird now has completed a five-year, full "Body-Off-Frame" restoration. It looks exactly the same as the Thunderbird Don had back in the sixties, white top and all, except this one is factory supercharged. The nice BMW R1200 motorcycle we bought several years ago is gone; too many thoughtless drivers on the roads these days, so the enjoyment of the bike was overridden by the continual concern about a driver running into us. It took all these years to get smart and stop riding. Just as we thought the TBird was the last car to restore, Don bought a special high-powered 1964 Fairlane that he had been chasing for 52 years, and has started another restoration. Linda likes this car and is going to drive it (but keep out of the gas). Work for our Town continues since retirement; Don finally retired from the Town Planning Commission after 43 years of service but is now assigned to new Committees to select the new Police SUVs, and to select a new digital communications system for Police and other public safety groups The combination of these activities takes a lot of time, but we support our Police Department strongly. We hope to hear from many of our old friends.

We are so pleased to see that the winter snow season has finally arrived. This is the view from our front door (from the prior snowstorm). Hand shoveled the entire driveway and parking places today just to get some exercise.
Which photo do tyou like better? The present 57 Thunderbird Facebook cover photo, or the 427 Fairlane? This is one of the photos taken by the talented photographers at Hemmings when they were preparing the story on the 427

To celebrate "First Day", we went on a hike with several local friends at a local State Park/ Trail. Perfect day to get outside and start 2024 the right way.

I updated my cover photo with a cropped shot of our 1957 supercharged Thunderbird as photographed at the Dino Petrocelli Studio in Albany, New York. The entire montage did not fit in the frame, so I'll post the entire imag
