Don 's Story

Hello, Now that the reunion is scheduled, I've re-read my original post and decided that it's too smart-assed even by my standards... Given this, and the fact that I loved reading Joe Appel's story, here's mine. As I managed to graduate PHS with the emotional maturity of a hyperactive 13 year old, I did a quick summation of my options and joined the Air Force. Before the class of '81 graduated, I was standing on an air strip in the Syrian border of Turkey thinking to myself "this should be interesting..." It was. I ended up staying just over five years in the USAF serving there, Hawaii, and northern Italy. Afterwards, I returned home (my folks had moved to Florida by then, as my father had family there) and went back to school with a completely different attitude. While there, I met a recruiter for the Foreign Service; the people who staff US embassies overseas. As I was a computer guy in the USAF, had the security clearance, and wanted to go overseas again, I applied. In January of 1988 I was sworn in and have been doing this ever since. My tours have been excellent, each and every one. I've served in Vienna, Turkey (again), Washington...Expand for more
, The Dominican Republic, Malaysia, France, and Australia. What a hoot! Once the kids graduated high school, I decided it was time to come back to the US so that everyone would have a stable nest to which they can return. We now live in Warrenton, Va and I commute to the Foreign Service Institute in Arlington each day. I'm in charge of an IT training section there. Warrenton is small town, not too dissimilar to the Puyallup of my memory. The countryside here is most definitly similar to the Pacific Northwest which suits me to a T. I do a lot of hiking and on days like today, where the snow is high courtesy of a winter storm, I do a lot of home improvement stuff. I'm married to the most intelligent person I've ever met (who, coincidentally, has more curves than the Santa Monica freeway but I consider that just a "bennie"), we have three children, two cats, and a dog. Although I've made a decided effort to slow down this year, the fact that I'm typing this at 6:00 AM may be an indicator as to my success. There you have it. I hope this finds you and yours doing well and I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone. Best, Don
