Don's Story
School
It's amazing how much of what I learned in Mr Browns high school chemistry class that I use every day. Even with two more semesters of chemistry at the UAF, I remember more of the high school course and I use aspects of such in cleaning and cooking every day. Enjoyed Film Club, still remember the film "If...". Was a nerd wall flower, my pic is out of order at the end in the '72 Anchor with the rest of the late pic takers. A lot of friends left when Barlett HS opened as well as Diamond HS. They finished the pool at the end of our term, but I swam laps in it all summer before heading north to UAF.

Military
Parents were determined that I not join Armed Forces, even though Dad served in the South Pacific during WW2 as an Army artillery hand. I evaded Vietnam by going to college. My draft number was 348 in 1972 and they only called to #5 before they quit and started the pull-out that ended in 1975. My cousin, Dick "Cherry Boy" Detra, was a Huey door gunner in the 188th "Spiders" during 1968-69. He survived and was active in developing the unit history and supporting the current manifestation of his unit which served in Iraq. Dick passed recently.
Now
Some river engineering consulting. Working on remote property on Chatanika River. Used to go one live Nascar race each year with a college buddy until he passed away from cancer. I have not traveled out of Alaska for many years now that COVID-19 makes it difficult. Upgraded from a dirt bike to a side-by-side for plowing snow and traveling into the Chatanika property (snogo during the winter). Two kids are doing fine in their careers here in Fairbanks. Realized that I need to trim back on projects laying around that I will never get too. Have Fakebook connection with Scott Moritz and Mark Pipkin.
