Don's Story
Life
I was headed to the University of Georgia to study forestry. Why, who knows? Went through San Jose, Ca, where my mom lived. Bingo; sun, the beach and San Jose State were there.
I worked my way through school over a decadeÂs time. First full time school/ part time work then reversed it. Got into sailing and racing boats. Then branched into road racing cars, setting a few speed records for amateur class in California.
Remember that 68Â Camaro convertible I had, well it burned up in Ca. But I found a replacement a couple years ago. ItÂs pretty cool to be running around on the weekends with the top down. It is red just like the one I had in high school.
Got married in my late 20Âs and have two children. My wife Carrie and I were working like crazy trying to make it in expensive California. Then I got a chance to transfer with a job to Austin, Tx.
The transition worked well for us. Carrie stopped working and stayed at home with the kids. We created an oasis for children to make our home the central point of all weekend activity.
By doing this we knew where they are and what they are doing. It was fun being the house where all the kids come to have fun. It is very often that we have high school kids sacked out on the floor trying to pull an all night movie session.
Sara my oldest is a mutant. If the poor gal did not look so much like me IÂd say switched at birth. Four year varsity Lacrosse (2 yr captain), VP marching & concert band (oboe), VP German club (TX state scholarship winner), three different charity clubs. Graduated #7 in her class of 658 students. in her second year at the College of William and Mary, Va. President of WomenÂs Rugby team and in charity org. DeanÂs list.
Patrick is 17 and wellÂ
just like me. He tries hard enough to get along but really just enjoys people. Close to six feet tall and a pretty good looking guy; red hair. YouÂll have to make the call on switched at birth looking at the photo's. Lacrosse, VP marching & concert band (sax), charity clubs etc. Pretty active. He will attend Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Ca. in Bio Engineering this fall. It wasnÂt a hard choice; college beach town or humid Texas college.
Carrie has been Âsuper momÂ. President of PTA multiple times, various positions on both Lacrosse teams and band boosters, She has spent 20 hours a week at the high school each week for six years doing volunteer work. She put in so much effort the band awarded her ÂHonorary Director status; first time it has ever been done. The band has done well; John Phillip Sousa award, won the Fiesta Bowl marching competition, placed 12 this past year in the National Championships (20,000 bands in the USA) and have won various awards. Don't know where it comes from, I can hardly play the radio.
I have continued to work in the computer chip making industry running sales and marketing for various companies. No choice; two kids with out of state tuition. It is unclear if we will stay in Texas or transfer with another job. Playing some golf and trying to figure out how to behave with the kids leaving. I'd like to teach college someday.
When I look out with my eyes, still feel 17. But who is that guy in the mirror?
