Don's Story

Life I attended West High from 1970-1973. While I was there, I was on the cross-country, track, and wrestling teams. After graduation, I attended the Ohio State University and majored in education. While I was there, I was on the wrestling team during my freshman year but had to quit because I was concerned with my classes. During my sophomore year, I took a fencing class and competed in the university intramural tournament, taking second place. After the tournament, the fencing coach asked me to join the team, where I competed from 1975-1978. While I was on the team, we were Big Ten runners up (1976 and 1978) and won the Big Ten in 1977, and ranked in the top ten teams nationally. I was also a scholar athlete for two years while on the team. After graduation, I taught 9th grade General Science at Westmoor Junior High. While I was there, I coached track at Westmoor and football and wrestling at West. After my first year, the school system lost a desegregation suit and I was concerned for my job, so I joined the Air Force. I was commissioned a second lieutenant and went to pilot training where I learned to fly B-52 bombers. I advanced in rank and position, flying as an instructor...Expand for more
pilot and was the Strategic Air Command subject matter expert in low level bombing tactics. During 1990, Desert Shield began and I was deployed to Diego Garcia to train crews in desert low level bombing. When Desert Storm began, I led a 15-ship formation that crossed the border 25 minutes after the war began to simultaneously strike four Iraqi airfields, preventing the Iraqi Air Force from deploying their forces and eventually forcing them to fly into Iran. Through the conflict, I was awarded three Air Medals as well as commendations from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, flying over 200 combat hours. After the war, I was transferred to Montgomery, AL where I taught at the Academic Instructor School, the Air Command and Staff College, and was the Division Chief of History and Core Competencies for the new Air and Space Basic Course for newly commissioned officers. I retired in 1999 and went to Asbury Seminary where I was trained as a pastor and I am now a pastor in the Alabama-West Florida Conference where I am serving in Frisco City, AL. I have been married to Cheryl (Gothard) for 23 years and have two sons, Andrew (17) and Zane (20). Zane is attending the University of Montevallo.
