Don's Story

Life After graduating with honors at Arlington High School, I attended the University of Texas at Arlington. I was a member of Pi Sigma Epsilon professional fraternity and Army ROTC. I graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and minor in Spanish. I was the "Distinguished Military Graduate" of my class, a member of the extracurricular Insurgent Team, battalion S-3 (training officer for the Corps of Cadets), and Executive Officer. I was nominated by professors for, and selected to, "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities". I was married in my senior year and commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army upon graduation in 1972. Thanks to the reductions in forces in Viet Nam, I was not required to complete two years of active duty, so in the fall of 1973, I enrolled in Southern Methodist University Law School, graduating in 1976. My daughter Amy was born on the second day of school. Most semesters I worked two jobs in addition to being a full time law student. Amy is now married and lives with her husband and my two grandchildren in Denton. The eldest granddaughter graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in nursing and is a nurse for Baylor Scott and White in downtown Dallas. The youngest granddaughter just graduated from Denton Ryan High School. Both granddaughters served as captain of the Denton Ryan cheerleaders. I attended the Army Officer's Advanced Course in 1978. I extended my reserve commitment in 1979 for another 4 years, and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserve as a captain in 1985. In 1979 I built my own law office (literally built it with my own hands, a hammer, and saws, etc.). Again, I worked other jobs to help pay the way until the practice grew. During the late 70's and the most of the 80's, I was also actively engaged in breaking and training horses and competing on horseback in timed events. I gave it up completely the last time one of the horses broke me. I have been remarried since 1986 and have two special children at home, William and Luke, as to both of whom my wife and I are co-guardians. I am a wildflower lover and have had great bluebonnet shows several years. I own several original bluebonnet paintings by the best bluebonnet artist, Cynthia Bryant. I sold my office building and have almost wound up my law practice after 41 years. I am skilled at baking (especially blackberry cobbler, date/nut cake, and pumpkin pie made from fresh pumpkins). Today's harvest from the garden. (Actually I went out later and got 15 more tomatoes and 3 peppers)
More goodness from the earth. Nothing like digging your fingers into the earth and finding these gems.

The male painted bunting from this morning returned to the feeder this afternoon. Since I have not seen a female, I suspect they are nesting nearby. We are excited to see such color, although the cellphone pics do not do it
