Don's Story

Life Well....it's been a long time. I'm not sure what's prompted me to post something about myself after having vanished for so long. I think in part that it's the realization that it has been 23 years since I (we) graduated from WWT!!!! Yikes! Where has the time gone? There's too much to tell to try to make any sense out of it in the few lines here, so I'll give you the Cliff Notes version: After graduation, I worked some odd jobs trying to figure out who I was and what I wanted to do. While working as a delivery person for an appliance store in 1986, I witnessed a near-fatal car crash. As my partner and I ran up to the scene I noticed the engine compartment smoking, and there was gasoline leaking. Fearing a fire might occur, I snatched the door open and pulled the driver to safety. Luckily there was no fire and the driver was transported by ambulance to the hospital. I never gave my own safety any thought....I put myself between the danger and the life. It was purely instinct. My partner (Jerry) suggested I look into the Fire Department or EMS. That moment changed my life. In 1987, I attended MCCC to study EMS and Fire Science. I received my Basic EMT license, but I never got to practice in Michigan. In March of 1988 I was offered a job as a Firefighter for a small southern town in South Carolina (Beaufort - between Hilton Head and Charleston on the Atlantic Coast). I worked there for 10 years, progressing up to the rank of Lieutenant in charge of training. I also was an instructor for the state Fire Academy Recruit Training Program. In August 1998, I returned to Michigan to search for a Firefighter job here at home. It took me a year, but in 1999, I landed a great job with Independence Township Fire Department in Clarkston. I attended college, earning my Critical Care Paramedic License from the University of Maryland Baltimore...Expand for more
College. In October of 2000, I married a long-time friend. Alissa and I met in Myrtle Beach in the Summer of 1991. We literally ran into each other in the lobby of a hotel. She was from Tennessee, and attending college in Charleston, WV. We wrote and talked when we could, but the distance (at the time) was too much. We broke contact a few years later. I had heard from her parents that she had married, then I heard she had a daughter, and then I heard she was divorced. One night in October of 1999, she searched the internet and found my number. We talked, and filled each other in on everything. I flew down to see her in December, and the rest is history. Enter September 11, 2001. Whoa!!! It felt like they flew those planes right into my soul that morning. Once again, I knew what I had to do. After talking it over with Alissa, I joined the U.S. Army. I took a leave of absence from the Fire Department to fight. Needless to say, life became very interesting, very fast. But it's all good: I lost some friends, fixed a few so they could go home, made some new friends, and don't regret a minute of it! I'm still a full-time a Critical Care Paramedic / Firefighter with Independence Fire Department, and I'm a Medical Officer on a UH60A Blackhawk helicopter for the U.S. Army. - The best of both worlds. Oh yeah, almost forgot.....I've got 2 brats!!! Hannah (18MAY1998), Alissa's daughter from her first marriage is now eight years old. She was only 18 months old when we met. Her father (sperm donor) doesn't want much to do with her. What a shame: She's a great kid. I love her, she calls me Daddy, and that's all that matters. Olivia (25NOV2003) is now five!! She's my cupcake! Look at the pictures: What else is there to say? We own a house in Davison. I drive a Chevy truck. I have all my hair, teeth, fingers and toes. Life is GOOD!
