Don's Story

Well I just realized how old the info I had posted was on what has happened in my life.. And unfortunately I won't make the reunion as we had already booked a European river cruise. My wife of 46 years (Carol-Anne and I live in Bloomington, IN,. Since I cannot make the reunion I will go into a little more detail . My wife and I are both retired professors from Indiana University. Small college towns are great places to live. We have great basketball seats for IU games and people complain if it takes more than 15-20 minutes to get anywhere. I am not completely retired, I am a "senior scholar" at USC (which means I have gotten old but can still be of some use. I get out to LA 3-4 times a year but mostly I telecommute.. I have loved being a professor, probably like owning your own company or business,, as long as you show up for classes - no one can tell you what to do. As part of my work I had two stints in university administration, ran a research center in DC for a while, lived in Russia for 4 months, and got to parts of Europe, China, S. Korea, and Taiwan. We have three boys, 40 year old twins, and 32 year old. One of the twins, David is married to a woman from Brazil. He ...Expand for more
is a high school English teacher and she is an engineer. Son Peter is a professor at Rhodes College in Memphis and his wife is from Scotland and is working on a master's degree in medical research. Our youngest son Jonathan, has severe cognitive delays and lives in a group home 4 miles from us. I had not been in touch with many folks in Vegas for many years, except emails from Sandy with updates which I have really appreciated (thanks Sandy!!) Some of you may have known Ed Stillian from Rancho. He and I played basketball at Cal Lutheran and became good friends. Sadly he passed away about 4 years ago from complications related to diabetes. Recently I have re-connected with Roy Godfrey twice and more recently also with Ron Arnoldsen - which has been great. I don't think we have embellished our glory days at Valley too much (smile). Again, I really wish I could join you in Sept. In retrospect I was lucky to be at Valley. I had moved from a small town in Michigan in 1964. Being able to start at a new school, where in some sense everyone was new was good for me as I was new too. If you ever get near Indianapolis or Louisville, we are only 60-80 minutes away and have plenty of room.
