Don's Story

Moved to Washington, DC right out of high school to work for the federal government. Was drafted in 1972, signed up for an extra year to get my choice of duty station and job. Played in the First US Army Band at Ft. Meade, MD from 1972 - 1975. Fulfilled my long-held dream of becoming a policeman (1975 - 1984) upon discharge from the Army. Finally realized my ideal job involved working with my hands, and became an electrician in 1984. Moved from the DC area to Charlotte, NC in 1989. Ran my own electrical business for 15 years, then sold out and went to work as the senior estimator for one of the local 'big boys' in the electrical business. Eventually became the general manager of one of the other 'big boys' in the new residential construction portion of the electrical industry, and as of June 30, 2016 am semi-retired, with a small consulting business servicing a select clientele doing mostly residential electrical estimating, but also critical power applications such as data centers. Married a woman I worked at the police department with in December of 1977. Had twins (son and daughter) in 1979, and another daughter in 1982. The Girls and their families still live in the Charlotte area. Our older daughter was married in 2008 and presented us with a granddaughter in May of 2010, and our younger daughter was married in 2007 and presented us with a grandson in May of 2011 and another granddaughter in June of 2013. Our son passed away suddenly on October 5, 2017 at the age of 37. He apparently had a heart issue which was not picked up in any doctor visits over the years. He was a mainstay in the musical theatre community in Charlotte, and the outpouring of support from that community has been humbling . We miss him every day, and my most sincere hope is that none ...Expand for more
of you ever has to go through the pain of losing a child. Still playing the bass, mostly in musical theatre orchestra pits although once in awhile a blues or oldies band gig pops up. I hope to continue playing for many years to come, although minor arthritis in the fingers from all the years in the electrical business as well as a recent diagnosis of the early stages of Parkinson's Disease makes it somewhat more difficult than it used to be. I'm actively attempting to stave off the mobility problems due to Parkinson's by walking as many holes of golf as I can each week. I've joined a local par 3 course, which is one of the few area courses I can walk instead of ride. I play a minimum of 18 holes, typically going either 27 or sometimes 36 if I'm up to it, several times a week. It's a whole bunch more fun than walking on the treadmill, which I'll do if I can't make it to the golf course at least 4 times a week. Those of you who knew my family may be interested to know that Dad passed away on February 13th of 2012 after a 2+ year battle with a brain tumor. His final wishes - to reach his 84th birthday and to see his beloved Giants win another Super Bowl - happened on January 25th and February 5th, respectively. Mom lived in their house for another year or so, then moved into a seniors facility nearby for another year. Dementia set in, and she moved to a seniors facility in Charlotte so we could spend as much time as possible with her. She passed away on September 14, 2015 having just celebrated her 87th birthday. My sister, her husband and 2 dogs live about 3 hours from us just outside Raleigh, NC. She continues her battle with an as-yet unidentified chronic disease by playing golf and running her home-based bookkeeping business. My warmest wishes to you all.
