Don's Story

Sitting here bored at the computer, decided to fill this out. Not sure if that's a good idea or not ... I attended the University of Oregon after FGHS and graduated in 1980 with a degree in Journalism. Spent three years in Newport as the news director at a radio station; met my wife, Anna, there. We were married in 1984 and moved to Newberg, where I spent three years working for the local newspaper. We still live in Newberg, but in 1986 I became the Public Affairs Director for Oregon AFSCME -- the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. I am essentially a communications director and a lobbyist at the state legislature. Once or twice a year I travel to Washington, D.C. That may sound more glamorous than it is; mostly, it's just a long flight. We have a son, Michael, who is a freshman at PCC, and a daughter, Elizabeth, who is a junior at Newberg High. Anna teaches fifth grade at Life Christian School in Aloha and takes a near-annual missions trip to the small country of Swaziland in Africa each summer. We are active in our church, Family Life Church here in Newberg. I am also an elected board member of the Chehalem Park & Recreation District, which is like being on a school board or city council, except CPRD is a separate taxing district that oversees parks and recreation in Newberg/Dundee. I'm currently in the midst of my fifth four-year term. I play a lot of golf; I wish I were better at it. Last year my best friend from church (also my chief golfing buddy) and I embarked upon a decade-long plan to play every public golf course in Oregon. There are 178 of them; we're at 52 and counting, though they get harder and more spread out as we go. But it's been fun. I also still play city league basketball and church league softball, though my knees are pretty well ...Expand for more
shot. I still have my "deceptive speed" -- I'm slower than I look. I do still have all of my hair and by-and-large it's not gray, so that's a blessing! We have had Ducks football season tickets forever and we split Blazers season tickets with two other people, so we go to about 15 Blazer games a year. It's much easier these days to watch than to play. Classmates I see often: Mitch Nosack and Dave Cadd, generally on a golf course somewhere. Classmates I see sometimes: Hans Holznagel, whenever he is out in FG to see his parents (generally once or twice a year) or whenever I am in Cleveland, where he currently lives (I've been in Cleveland like twice ever). Rick Smithrud, who lives in McMinnville but likes to frequent the Newberg Fred Meyer. Ron Hundley, who is "Mr. Information" about anyone in our class (Ron and I are shirt-tail relatives, something like sixth cousins). Julie Grant, whose brother Jerry (FGHS Class of 1973) is an assistant basketball coach at Newberg High. Julie's nephew (Jerry's son) plays on the NHS team. I have also seen Dave Horesky and Steve Matiaco a few times in recent years at various Newberg vs. Forest Grove football and basketball games. And I see Brad Richardson every 3-4 years when I get around to getting my eyes examined. This is, I'm sure, much more than anyone wants to know. Final note: I learned recently that Cathy Bowman, who was Class of 1978, is deceased. If anyone reading this knows what happened to her and when, I'd sure like to know. Cathy and I were at one point in time very good friends -- just "friends," never anything more -- before we lost track of each other as life moved on. I was saddened to hear that she had passed away -- it may have happened long ago, I have no idea -- and I would just like to know what happened. Thanks.
