Don's Story
After graduating CHS I went to Tennessee Wesleyan College, in Athens. After graduation in 1967 I entered the Marine Corps as a second lieutenant, and served in the 2d MARDIV at Camp Lejeune, MCAS Kaneohe Bay Hawaii and in Vietnam, as a rifle platoon and company commander. I was wounded in the latter on Sept. 14, 1968 and medevaced out of country, spending four months in hospital recovering. I was discharged in 1971 wth the rank of Captain. This is, obviously, a very long story put very short. Semper fidelis....!
I decided to remain in Hawaii and lived there for 14 years. I was recruited by the State of Washington in 1983 and moved to the state capital, Olympia. Somewhere along the line I became a criminologist (yes, it was a surprise to me too), and worked for the Dept. of Corrections. I eventually became Executive Officer of the state's Sentencing Guidelines Commission. In 1994 I moved to Seattle and worked as a consultant for a Cambridge-based think tank and consulting firm, Abt Associates.
It wasn't easy to leave Honolulu, but I had developed a passion that made it easier: climbing. I was very involved with rock and alpine climbing for many years, and taught it as well. Back country skiing was part of the mix to...Expand for more
o. I have many happy memories from the mountains (and some sad ones too; as in Vietnam, some friends died, and I had to bring their bodies home).
I forgot to get married until 1988, when I was 43. My wife, Teri, was born in California but raised in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Spokane, Washington. She worked for a wine distributor when we met, which provided some pleasant opportunities. We did not have children.
In 1999 Teri was recruited by an Australian firm and I became a "trailing spouse" when we moved to Sydney. To be honest, I didnt' want to come at first. I'd never been to Oz, and wasn't very interested. Now, after ten years, you couldn't get me out. It is a wonderful place to live. We've bought a house, and got our permanent residence visas in 2005. In 2007 we became Australian citizens. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. After 14 years in Sydney we moved to Queensland, a few kilometres from the Coral Sea. Last year it was a transfer to Adelaide, South Australia, where we remain. Most of my travel now is in Australia (it's a bloody big place), or within the region (New Zealand, New Caledonia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Bali). I hear "Waltzing Matilda" in my dreams. I'm fair dinkum now, mate! G'day.......
