Don's Story
Hello fellow North Graduates,
I live on 80 acres located in So. Illinois (Waltonville) along with my wife (Chris Bateman - North '68), two kids and two Grand-kids.
My daughter and her family live on the same property located deep in a wooded section of the property along with our two Grand-kids (both boys) and our son-in-law.
Our son is temporarily living with us until August when he is going to get married to a Major in the Air Force. She is currently stationed in England at the same Air Force base Chris & I were station at in 1969 - 1972. In fact, our daughter was born in England at the same hospital that our future daughter-in-law is assigned to.
Lets go back to the beginning: I received a BS Computer Science & Electrical Engineering degree from U of E in 1980 after spending 7 years in the Air Force. Chris received her BA Accounting degree in 1979 from Indiana State.
Chris and I both went to work for Harris Corporation located in Melbourne, FL. From 1980 - 1986, I was assigned to developing application software for both NASA and NOAA. I worked on 2 Space Shuttle projects (Discovery and Challenger) for NASA and the 'National Weather System' project for NOAA - (both were great projects to work on!).
From there, Chris and I moved to California where I worked for several aerospace corp...Expand for more
orations including: Hughes Aircraft and TRW. When there was a down-turn in defense money, I jumped ship and moved from Aerospace over to Healthcare by accepting a director of software development position with Pacificare Health Systems.
Chris and I returned to the Evansville area in 1994 where both of us worked for American General Finance (Corp. office) in Evansville until 1999.
In 1999, Chris and I bought the property mentioned above and I accepted a tenured professor position teaching 'Computer Science' and 'WEB Development' at Rend Lake College.
Chris and I started our own business called 'America Net Solutions' (ANS) in 2002. ANS specializes in providing EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) processing for large Pharmaceutical Return companies and Software Development Consulting.
In August of this year, I accepted a managerial position with Smith & Nephew (S&N) located in Memphis Tn. S&N is a large Orthopedic, Endoscopy and Wound Management company located in 33 countries. Because my staff is located through-out the US, Canada and Europe, I can pretty much work from anywhere; consequently, I work from home in So. Illinois every other week.
I will probably stay with S&N until I retire.
