Don's Story

I am a very lucky man. I know that much. I have a wonderful family, live in a nice home, have a nice job and enjoy traveling and spending time with my family. It was not part of any grand plan but happened to work out that way. My wife, Lori, and I both work for ExxonMobil. We met in a training class over 20 years ago. She is a sharp and smart Programs Manager for our Credit Card portfolio and I am the Advertising Manager for our C-store chain. I wanted to be Veterinarian or an Animal Biologist (the next Marlin Perkins ... Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom ... remember that show?). I went to Va Tech and then on to Penn State for a Masters of Science. I worked in the animal field (Animal Behavior ... Social systems, etc.) for a few years and worked in some neat parts of the country (North Dakota, Wyoming, San Juan Islands in the Puget Sound) but had a hard time making a real career out of it. While working as a Research Aide at Penn State, I was turned on to the MBA Program there. I got in and entered into the business world (some cracked that my Animal Behavior background was much more suited to the business world anyway!). I was recruited by Exxon and hired into their management program. It has been rewarding. I have had various jobs in Marketing, including as a Global Advisor where I worked in Japan, Europe, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. Very interesting. Remind me someday to tell you about the earthquake in Tokyo. That's another story. ...Expand for more
While working for Exxon, I lived in Houston. Actually enjoyed it down there despite the 1,000% humidity and unbearably hot weather in the summer (that is why they invented air conditioning!). But it was a long way away from family. Got married while in Houston (my future wife was transfered to Houston around the same time as I was ... we were just friends and colleagues at the time) and we had two kids. So, my kids are Texans. They remember the Alamo. When Exxon and Mobil merged in 2000, we volunteered to move to Fairfax where the Marketing HQ was to be. Said goodbye to our Houston home of 13 years. So, I got to move back home! My daughter Emily is heading to Va Tech this fall. She is smart (takes after her mother) and was recruited into their Engineering program. She also loves to sing and is in many choirs, including District and State. My son Matt is 4 years behind her and is a handful; loves playing sports (takes after his dad!). He also wants to go to Va Tech some day (yahoo ... two in-state tuitions!) We love living in Fairfax, closer to my mom, dad and brothers who still live close by. Also lots to do around here ... DC, beaches, skiing ... and great schools. My sister also lives in the southern part of Virginia. So, we see each other a heckuva lot more than if I was still in Texas. So, everything is working out. So far, so good! I don't always lead a super exciting life, but it is pretty fun after all. That is my story and I am sticking to it!
