Don's Story
Life
Since leaving Burbank in 1956, I have lived in Ontario, CA, Honolulu, HI, San Diego, CA, Palm Springs, CA, Harrisonburg, VA, Bloomington, IN and finally Salisbury, MD. We have resided in Salisbury since 1971.
I received an EdD in mathematics education from Indiana University (1975). While at Indiana University, I worked under Maki and Thompson as graduate assistant in their pioneering Mathematical Models and Applications course. I completed an MA in mathematics at San Diego State University (1966), a BA in mathematics at the University of Hawaii (1960), and an AA at Chaffey College (1958). I started my teaching career at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii where I taught mathematics and coached track and field. I taught at Palm Springs High School in California and at James Madison University in Virgina before coming to Salisbury University (SU) in 1971. Although my primary teaching interests are in the areas of mathematical modeling and mathematics for elementary school teachers, I also taught such courses as operations research, calculus, linear algebra, and computer graphics. In addition to serving as chair of the Department of Mathematics for four years, I served as dean of the Henson School of Science and Technology for two and one-half years, and as provost of the university for three yea...Expand for more
rs. I also was SU's track and cross country coach for several years. After 37 years at SU I retired in July of 2008. I am currently professor emeritus of mathematics in the Henson School of Science and Technology at SU.
I married my wife Lynn in Hawaii in 1962. We have two married daughters, Laurie Baumgartner and Janice Wilson, two grandsons Jonah and Evan Baumgartner, and twin (boy and girl) grandchildren Andrew and Kasey Wilson.
Over the years, I have maintained an active interest in running, cross country, and track & field through either coaching, officiating, or running in road races. Now my exercise activities are primarily conducted at the YMCA or on the road on my bicycle.
