I was born in Everett Washington, 1944, attended Kindergarten and first grade at Baker Heights. Family moved to Medford Oregon in 1951. I attended Roosevelt Elem 2nd, 2nd(again), and 3rd grades. We moved to Great Falls Montana in 1954. I attended Roosevelt Elem 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. We moved to McKinleyville California in 1956. I attended McKin. Elem. 7th and 8th grades. We moved to Santa Barbara California in 1958. I attended LaCumbre JH and S.B.H.S graduating in 1963, OK so it was 1963 and 1/2 but I claim 63 and so far they are OK with that. Following HS I enlisted in the Army, Armor(Tanks). I served in Korea, 64-65 Germany, 65-66 Fort Bragg, 66-68, with several months at Ft. Knox, KY with the Armor Engineering and Test Board field testing the "new" M-551 armor vehicle. I returned to Santa Barbara in 1968. I have been living in the area since then. I have been living in Ventura since 1985 with my family, my wife Beth and daughter Jessica.
I met my wife in 1977 at Sambo,s Northside in Santa Barbara. I would stop there to eat before an evening of volleyball and workout at the Santa Barbara YMCA. We were married in 1983.
Our daughter, Jessica was born in 1988 and is nothing like her Dad. She is an Honor student and a gifted athlete. She wants to be a teacher and that drives her to be the best that she can be in school. She plays soccer and softball. We support her in all that she strives for and always listen to her when she needs to heard. Jessica will graduate from Ventura High this June, 2006. She wants to attend Ventura College for one or two years and then decide where she wants to pursue her further education. Her desire to become a teacher has changed with her growing awareness of the world around her. Her evolution in high school has been amazing to watch over the years. I am so excited to see where she takes herself.
My work is interesting and always changing, there is always something new to resolve. The company is employee orientated and the people there are great to be around. For fun and exercise the past several years I have been refereeing AYSO soccer as Jessica grew up playing this sport and softball. The past four years I have also been refereeing high school soccer in the Ventura county area and on occasion in the Carpentaria area. I had scheduled myself to ref the SBHS boys varsity vs the alumni this year but pulled a leg muscle at the Carpentaria tournament the weekend before the game and was not able to fill the assignment. I was really looking forward to ref''ing in Peabody Stadium. Maybe next year. Just to update. I suffered a mild heart condition, Atrial Fibulation, and pretty much ended my refereeing sideline. Continued working until 2011 and then retired. I busy myself with things to do around the house and yard.

rs my basic training was a cake walk. The weather was beautiful the entire time, it is in California after all. My Advanced Individual Training (AIT) was at Fort Knox from November to February with a two week break for Christmas (instead of at the end of Basic). Took a bus form Ft. Knox to Santa Barbara and back at Christmas, that is a whole book on its own.
My first duty station was in Korea. I left Oakland in February on the good ship Daniel I Sullivan. Sailing the Pacific was an exprience not to be forgotten. In Korea I was stationed at Camp Rose and served with Company C 1/15 1st Cavalry Div.
I returned to the States and was assigned to Fort Hood, Texas. After three months in a recon platoon in an Infantry company I re-enlisted for a three year tour in Germany.
In Germany I was stationed at Sullivan Barracks near Mannheim. I was in Company C 3rd Inf 68th Armor. I left New York and sailed on one of the last troop ships to be used moving troops to Europe. I don't remember the ship's name but it was a nice cruise. Unfortunately the Viet Nam war and LBJ, interfered and I was back in the states in less than a year.
This time I was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. I was assigned to the newly opened Basic Training group. I worked in the motor pool driving truck and in the driver training and testing office for that area.
After about 6 months at Bragg I was temporarily assigned to the Armor and Engineer Board at Fort Knox KY. I love that state. My group was testing the, then new, M-551 Airborne Tank/Recon vehicle. An assignment that was supposed to last 3 months when on for about 6 months and finally ended when my tank was air dropped as a demonstration for Washington brass. Good news, the chutes opened, better news the tank didn't stay attached to the tank. End of tank end of assignment. Back to Fort Bragg with about 7 months left to serve.
I went back to my duties at Bragg and finished my time. Jim Russo, Tom Hetzel and I made many trips to Myrtle Beach and the area around Ft. Bragg. It was a great time, the three of us had a great time while the United States was coming apart at the seams.
There is so much more that is important to me but comes off as just an old mans stories. There is also Joseph "Amos" Bergeron in Germany who helped me in more ways than I can count. He got me to buy a guitar and began to teach me to play. He went to Ft Lewis and I went to Ft. Bragg. I never learned to play the guitar very well but after all these years it is still a refuge that I can find peace while I play. Thanks Amos.
50 year reunion this year. How could that have happened? I am aware that it has been awhile since the Class of 63 graduated but 50 years! What a strange and wonderful trip it has been so far. I look forward to seeing my classmates again and feel a deep sorrow for the friends and people I knew that will not be joining us. It will be good to see those of us remaining once again and, hopefully, not for the last time.
