Don's Story
May 2018
I returned to the San Diego area with my wife, Patty, 30 years ago. I’ve been retired for 22 years now after a long, interesting and mostly satisfying career as a university professor (23 years), university president (16 years), and national and California science and technology policy author, executive and consultant (29 years).
That career began post Grossmont with B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from UC Riverside and UCLA respectively
Patty and I celebrated our September 1st, 60th wedding anniversary with our four children, their spouses and our ten grandchildren as well as number of friends in early August 2017.

g us as often as possible. Since they live in Northern California, Scottsdale and Tucson Arizona, and Bethesda, Maryland, we also frequently travel to see them.
While we did extensive personal and professional international travel in our earlier years, our current travel activities center around our family. We also enjoy taking continuing education courses at UC San Diego a few times a week as well as using our 30 years running season tickets at the Old Globe Theatre.
I continue to have fond memories of teachers and friends from my Grossmont years.
We were all so fortunate to have such outstanding teachers back then like Josephine Kollmeyer in math and George Gross in English. They and so many others were truly very special mentors.
Best regards to all,
Don Shields
