D. Lee's Story
Life
I joined the Navy in '83 & spent the next 5 and a half years roaming around the world. Somewhere in the middle I went to Annapolis for a year, but decided that I hated military schools. I finished out my enlistment & became a free man in '88. I then got a job handing out keys at a Holiday Inn (which is marginally better than flipping burgers), then 6 months later gratefully accepted a scholarship to Georgia Military College.... you guessed it, a military school. GMC had an Army commissioning program. They slept in mud & marched from sunup to sundown with 45-pound rucksacks. They went for weeks without bathing. Suddenly Annapolis didn't seem so bad.
I left with an Engineering degree that I had no desire to use, then went on to Georgia College and earned a BS in Chemistry. I realized at some point that I had no more love for Chemistry than I did for Engineering. After graduating, I moved to Tampa. two years later I found myself staring across the DMZ in Korea, playing peek-a-boo with someone who, like me, was probably paying the price for higher education. I wasn't all too clear on how I'd gotten there, but it had something do with a contractual obligation....and something about making little rocks out of big rocks if declined to go. Several years have passed now, and IÂm a Captain with nearly 15 years of service. Funny how things worked out.
