Donald's Story

Life It is 2023 and time to update this and my photo, I guess. I live in Muskego with my wife, and my daughter has married and purchased a house with her husband in Williams Bay. Our two boys are on their own; the oldest is married and has two daughters and the youngest is now engaged and has a house in Muskego. Both boys are no longer working with me being as I am now retired! Finally. I worked as a technical writer/illustrator full time, and have also freelanced for about 10 years. I drew a cartoon strip for about 10 years and wrote magazine articles (mostly car stuff) for about six years. I recently finished writing a non-fiction book on WW2 (15th air force based in Italy). It is available in the Muskego library. I have an idea for a novel (as does every retired person, I guess). I may start that project eventually. I got lucky after being drafted and trained as a combat engineer; I wound up as a military artist in Korea for a year and a half. I really enjoyed my time and had time to see things and interact with a culture I never would have had an opportunity to see as a young man. Aside from a soldier's usual bar time, I was able to visit with some of the Korean soldier's families and learn a bit of the language. If you've seen M*A*S*H, that is exactly how we lived (except we had Quonset huts). I left the Army as a sergeant. It was pretty good duty considering Vietnam was at full tilt then. I met some LIFE magazine photographers there, and got interested in photography. I studied commercial art and photography in college and also did some magazine photography for a while. Prior to my job as a writer, I worked at Allen-Bradley for ten years (just enough for the pension), and then at Miller Brewing for another five. We've done a little traveling, mostly in the US (although my work sent me to Germany once and also Hawaii, whi...Expand for more
ch was very nice), and have enjoyed the western states and Hawaii the most as there always seems to be new things to see and do there.. We are doing a lot of traveling via cruise ships lately and some travel with the Muskego Corvette Club, as we have a couple of‘vettes. I did a little drag racing for a couple of years (early '70s) and am proud to say I was only beaten once. Apparently I once had very fast reactions. I fairly recently took a flight in a WW2 bomber, a B-17G Flying Fortress (my father's ride during the war): very, very cool. We also went for a hot-air balloon flight, but the bomber was better. And as it's time to start working on the Bucket List, I drove a NASCAR car at Kentucky Speedway (152 mph bumping the engine's governor), spent the night in a WW2 submarine, did some zip-lining in Montana and Columbia, and dove with a school of rays off St. Martin's Island. I am loving retirement. I like to work out and do so daily, I bowl during the week, and have a few collector cars to keep me busy. I've also taken up model building (cars and WW2 aircraft) as something to do during inclement weather. I also have more time to read now (fiction and non-fiction) with interests in history, politics, sci-fi, and thrillers. Also, being as the kids all have houses, I can help them with remodeling, something I really enjoy doing. Recently had the opportunity to build a couple of recreation rooms for them, and some other projects. I lost 5 lbs. recently while doing extensive work on my daughter's house! It was nice to see those pounds go, and dropped another 10 by saying no to the donuts. All in all, life has been pretty good. I'm walking upright and all my parts still seem to function adequately. My wife is still beautiful and my kids seem to like me. Still waiting for that lottery win, though. And I really need more garage space.
