Donald's Story

I lost my son, 45, just a week ago. Approximately 8:30 last Saturday, April 6, I received a call from his wife Allison, obvioiusly crying. She said, Chris killed himself. I said what?? "Chris just shot himself in the head. He killed himself" The police are still here. Oh my god, oh my god!!! This is all that came from my mind, my mouth. His poor wife witnessed the terrible tragedy in their bedroom. Their kids were in another part of the house. Chris was apparently handling his gun badly, his hand was shaking from a problem not yet diagnosed. I did not know he had a gun or he had a physical ailment that caused this uncontrollable shaking. I did not know he was taking Adderall (It was not prescribed) or that he was drinking every day. He did a lot of range shooting in the past, as a hobby, with his wife and boys. Apparently he had a "hair trigger" put on his gun. His wife said he was proud of this alteration to his gun. . However, a bump, slight touch or probably in this case, a shaking hand is all it took to go off. I buried my son on Thursday, April 11 at 10am, near Dallas. No clue what was going through my dear grandson's heads as they lived throu...Expand for more
gh these hours and days, even now. Certainly shock and horror. Cannot imagine it registered for them. He was buried nearby. Horror, is the best possible word I have to describe it all. He should have been looking over me in that coffin, not this. The morning before, I spoke with Chris. He texted me the night before to let me know he and his wife wanted to speak with me. Nothing odd. He said they had been hacked and wanted some suggestions. I called him the morning before his death. He said the kids were there and told me we could talk when the kids were not there as he did not want them to worry. He said, Dad I love you, as usual. I said, I love you son, as always and we hung up. We did not speak after that. Time gets away from us all. Not sure if I was to call him or he was to call me. But, we did not speak again. Not know what else to say, what to think, what to do and why there is a tomorrow and probably a day after. Terrible accident, and even more terrible if it was not an accident. Just ask for your prayers and good thoughts if you might take those moments for my son, his 12 and 14 year old sons, his step daughter and his wife. Don Holben
