Donald's Story
After graduation in June 1951 I joined the Navy and got to visit such nice places as Great Lakes, IL; Portsmouth, VA; a tour of duty with the Fleet Marine Force which was kind enough to let me visit Korea with the Marine infintry as a Hospital Corpsman.
Then in 1955 I got married and it was off to college to get a degree in Pharmacy at what is now The University of Sciences in Philadelphia..
After graduation I accepted a position as a Research Pharmacist with McNeil Labs (a Johnson & Johnson company). McNeil is commonly referred to as the "Tylenol Company"). Over the course of 7 years I had several promotions I became Assistant Production Manager.
In 1966 I was recruited by Hoechst Pharmaceuticals, a German owned, Farbwerke Hoechst AG, as Production Manager. Soon to be promoted to Director of Manfacturing of the now known as the"Lasix" company". I really loved living in Cincinnati, OH. "Cinti" is a good ol' German town and Hoechst huge ol' German company, I soon acquired a taste for beer and wine. That was a great addendum to my education. Of course, the required trips to the parent company in Germany.helped too.
In 1966 I was recruited to be Director of Manufacturing for Marion Labs. in Kansas City, MO. I love the midwest. KCMO was a great place to raise our 5 children.Forty-six years later 4 kids still live in the KCMO and a son lives in St. Louis, MO. In 1972 I was promoted to Corporate Vice President, Manufacturing & Engineering.
Over the years I developed a strong background in plant design...Expand for more
and process engineering. I held membeships in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers.
I developed a reputation as a "go to man" in my area of expertise.
In 1978, my former boss at Hoechst, asked me to rejoin him as a Vice President of Operations of Adria Labs. (Italian owned) in Columbus ,OH.
A year later returned to Missouri due to pressing family matters.
As Vice President of Operations I assisted a company work through complicated FDA problems.
In 1981 an international pharmaceutical/chemical engineering offered me a Senior Vice President position in Cincinnati. I spent considerable time developing business in Egypt.
While in Cincinnati I formed Burkit & Associates consulting.
In 1988 I accepted a two year contract to function as a Vice President to resolve manufacturing issues.
In 1990 it was back to Missouri. By this time I had several back, neck and knee surgeries and cardiomyopathy so I decided to retire.
I lived in Iowa City, IA for eight years which was a wonderful experience, I loved those Hawkeyes and Big 10 sports.
In 2011 it was back to Kansas City to enjoy my children, grand children and great grand children.
At last count there are 3 sons, 2 daughters, 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. I guess I am a production kind of guy!
In my twilight years I am thoroughly enjoying my family and serving those who can benefit from my knowledge and experience. My church offers unlimited opportunities to fulfill this desire.
