Donald's Story

Donald Roy GALLEY Clawson High School Class of 1965 2654 E Log Lk Rd NE Kalkaska, MI 49646 (231)886-0017 Donald Hampton GALLEY Redford High School Class of Jan 1940 Died - 02 Jul 2007 MILITARY CAREER Donald GALLEYs' middle name, Hampton, was given to him after the Naval base in Hampton, VA, where his father had served approximately thirty years earlier. Don served during WWII and his dog tag (currently in his family packet) is #36529276. His military career was initiated on the 22nd of September 1942 through the courteous invitation of the United States government. At that time he was then wearing badge #W4339 working as an apprentice tool and die maker at Ford Motor Company operating a shaping machine. He requested and received a leave of absence from Ford on the 24th of September 1942 in order to fulfill his military obligations. The twenty one year old began his military career by completing his basic training at Camp Roberts in California. He was immediately sent to Fort Sill in Oklahoma to begin training as a “90 day wonder”. He was a member of Field Artillery School #60. He successfully completed his Officer Candidate School training in fire direction, artillery tactics, reconnaissance, observed fire, signal communications, and methods of instruction and training. His graduation and appointment as 2nd lieutenant was conferred on the 15th of April 1943. His military occupational specialty was listed as Reconnaissance and Survey Officer, and as a Forward Artillery Observer. From Fort Sill he was transferred to Camp McCain in Mississippi with the 87th infantry Acorn Division. It was there that he and his future bride, Mary Balakovich became engaged. After a short layover there, he was shipped out on the 14th of March 1944 to begin his tour of active duty in the European Theatre of action. His division landed in Scot...Expand for more
land on the 22nd of March 1944. To further his communication skills he was sent to England to train with the 200th field group. He remained there in Bournemoth England until D-Day. He was shipped to Normandy France in order to rejoin his unit. They worked their way through Belgium toward Germany. These were the winter months, his housing was the military pup tent which had been issued to him. Upon waking each morning, the first task of the day was to brush the wind blown snow from his sleeping bag and tent. In order to prepare him for an anticipated thrust across the Rhine into Germany, scheduled for the 1st of January 1945, he was flown back to England on General Omar Bradley's private plane to undergo parachute training. The 101st Airborne Divisions parachute jumping school was held just outside of London. After learning chute packing, the necessary ground training, and the essentials of jumping from a plane in flight, he made five jumps - and according to him five too many. He gained the rating as a qualified parachutist, an increase of $100 per month in pay, and his 1st lieutenant commission on the 20th of November 1944. He then rejoined his and 5 other divisions (approximately...100,000 men) for the anticipated January invasion. Germany moved first however and crossed the Rhine an the 17th of December 1944. Don was transferred to the 3rd Army 9th Armored Division to act as a forward observer. During his 40 months in the military, Lieutenant GALLEY participated in five military campaigns encompassing those in Normandy, Ardennes, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He returned to the United States on the 29th of December 1945 and spent his accumulated military leave in the Detroit area before finally being formally discharged from active military service from Camp Atterbury Indiana on the 6th of March 1946.
