Donald's Story
Life
After graduating from Kennedy, I obtained a B.S. in 1981 at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) with a double major in Astronomy & Physics. I obtained an M.A. in Physics from Wayne State in 1983, an M.A. in Astronomy from Indiana University in 1985, and a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from IU in 1988. After getting my doctorate, I obtained postdocs at University of Colorado (1988-1990) and Iowa State University (1990-1993). Following this, I worked at NASA/Goddard in Maryland (1993-1996). I have been at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) since the summer of 1996. I received tenure as a professor in the Dept. of Physics, Astronomy, & Geology at ETSU in 2002 and was made Department Chair in the summer of 2006. I have never been married and have no kids. I have traveled extensively -- all over the USA, Denmark, Norway, Italy, and Turkey, where I had two drumsticks. I have been living in apartments most of my life, but finally got around to buying my own house in 2004. Over the past few years I have really gotten into high-resolution music (SACDs and DVD-Audios) and high-definition TV with my home theater that I have built in my rec room. I have a fairly good audio system in both my living room and home theater with universal DVD players and 7.1 surround sound receivers. As a result of this, I seldomly go to theaters anymore. I recently bought a...Expand for more
n Acura RDX (2007) with a Tech package including a high-resolution ELS surround audio system in it. I typically vacation in Michigan every summer for a few weeks.
School
Had a great time at Kennedy and enjoyed all of the joking around that I did with my friends. Worked at Taco Bell on Ecorse (the original one, not that "false" one that I saw last time I was in Taylor) while in high school and had an equally great time and made a lot of friends. For those who are interested, yes I still know (but seldomly sing) the Greek Alphabet song I invented and still own (but seldom wear) bright colored socks.
College
Since my "Life Bio" is essentially the same thing as my "College Bio," I won't repeat it here. The main thing I remember was the difficultly I had going to UM-Ann Arbor while working 30 hours a week at Taco Bell and Meijers. Fortunately, I survived and continued on to my Ph.D.
Workplace
Once again, this is described in my "Life Bio." I had the most fun at Taco Bell, Meijers, and K-Mart. My positions at NASA/Goddard were a bit of a drag since both of my jobs there were support jobs (one at the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) observatory and the other at the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)). Of course, the best job I have had is my current one since my time is my own and teaching at the college level is pretty fun.
